I realized I don't have much desire to compete in automotive racing so I got to wondering what it is I really want to do. I know I have developed a few goals over the years and thought I would share them and ask for some of yours.

Mine:
-Build, own and drive a 1000hp vehicle
-Build, own and drive a car > 200mph
-Build, own and drive a sub 10 second car to a sub 10 second 1/4
-Win the Challenge or at least build something so nutty it is challenge/internet legend.
-Own, maintain, drive and experience life with most of the cars I have ever found interesting.

What about you guys?

I would like to take a worthwhile car down to a bare shell and bare block and build it back up again. I want to know every but and bolt and electrical connector on the car. What they do, how they work and why they're there. I want to be able to do this without having to worry too much about cost.

Mine are mostly based on certain builds.

3SGTE powered MK3 Supra street car

Stage Rally Turbo 5.0 4-door Ford Maverick

300ci straight-six 69 Mustang "GT300" Time Attack/hillclimb car

Porsche 3.2 liter single-cam turbo 4 in a 76 924

912R (a 911R replica built on a 912)

Meyers Manx with a 993 Turbo engine and a G50 transmission.

At this point, most of them are pipe dreams. Most realistically, the 912R, the 350 horsepower 924, and the Supra will become reality. I, at least, already have the Supra shell ready to go.

I want a car that sounds like the Audi S1 E2.

Barring that, I can't think of anything automotive that I want that I don't already have or used to have. I've been in sub 10 second cars and don't really find them to be much fun, since you can't ever actually use that kind of power on the street. Even 800hp is generally only useful for making tire smoke until you're into triple digit speeds, so having that kind of power is like having a SHINY CANDY-LIKE BUTTON that you can never push unless you go to a dragstrip with its perfect, scraped, VHT-ed surface, and then it's over in several seconds.

Build something that I really, really engineered significant portions of. I hope to tick that off with the 2002 before too long and then raise my sights from there...

So far in my life, I've owned vehicles with 2 doors (Miata), 3 doors (Ford Probe GT), 4 doors (Audi B5 S4 sedan, Silverado crew cab), and 5 doors (Audi B6 S4 Avant, Odyssey, a Focus wagon, and an older Taurus wagon).

So now I have to look for something with zero doors (like a Seven!), one door (Uh... Isetta? I don't really want one of those) and six doors (WTF would this be?).

I've accomplished pretty much every one that I've had, but when I retire, I would like to build a tube chassis car (and possibly body) from the ground up. I don't know what I'll do in my second year of retirement.

I'm old but motivated, so I've gotten a lot of my goals done. A lot of it started with racing motorcycles and by necessity getting tools and skills. As I did better financially I always invested in tools, and a couple years ago finally got a nice sized garage w/ all the welding, fab and mechanical stuff and a big basement w/ a full machine shop - so I can do everything in-house, quickly. I'm putting in heat this week so I can do composite work in the winter, and will probably install a lift in the spring. Having the right stuff really makes it possible to produce good work.

Here's what I've done did:

  • Restore a car from a grease spot and boxes of parts: '62 Sprite about 15 years ago.
  • Modify a car w/ nice parts the right way the first time: '02 ep3 Civic.
  • Rear Wheel drive iconic performance car!: '98 e36 M3 bought in '07 (Which served for...)
  • Go autocrossing low budget fun style.
  • Build car to STU rules, get beat mercilessly by STi-s and evos.
  • Do a track day.
  • Do a lot of track days.
  • Do some time trials.
  • Start instructing HPDEs.
  • Get a race car: '00 Radical Clubsport.
  • Get a race license: SCCA double school, Summit 3/11
  • Do GRM UTCC - Get heat stroke: GRM UTCC.
  • Own a Suzuki Hayabusa powered car: Converted Radical, summer '12.
  • Crash a race car: Radical, Summit, 10/12.
  • Rebuild a race car from a bare chassis, bins of parts, a set of body molds and a lot of resin and fiberglass: Radical, ongoing now.

For the future:

  • Finally finish the Sprite's 15 year tidy-up which was interrupted 2 years ago by moving to a project house w/ a giant garage and machine shop which makes everything possible.
  • Get the Radical really dialed perfectly so it's predictable and reliable. Do a 1'13" at Summit, do a string of 14's.
  • Have everything running at once: Sprite, Radical, M3, Miata, 525i, Tacoma, KTM690SMC, RD400, Go-Ped. All going at one time.
  • Some sort of Lotus 7 clone. Maybe a Brunton .
  • Something with a V8.
  • A supercar. After I'm done w/ racing and sell everything, maybe I could swing a minor Ferrari? -2XXX Challenge.

I have gotten to do what I have wanted so far by sacrificing having no life and working alot.

But my future goals are just stepping up my game:

  1. Get a better daily driver. I am thinking of a Ford Fiesta next year.
  2. Get my Ranch Wagon ready for the occasional road duty(fun).
  3. Get a better track toy. This time a log booked one ready to race.
  4. Get a better tow vehicle. This time something that has a bed in it not me putting up a tent or a cot in the back of the truck at track weekends.
  5. Get another bike. This time a BMW GS of some sort. Damn you ADVrider!!!!

Edit: I forgot a few:

  1. Own a 911 of any type
  2. Own a C5 Z06 or C6 Z06
  3. Drive the Nurburgring
  4. Work a complete season with a winning race team

Build my own car from scratch.

Own a very nice all original second gen Trans Am.

Go on an epic drive in an epic car. Example Maine to Washington in a Viper.

Drive; Leguna Seca, Road America, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, Mid Ohio, Lime Rock, VIR and the Nurburgring.

Attend the Rolex 24 and the 24hrs of Le Mans.

Attend the Isle of Man TT races.

Drive in the Baja 1000.

I give any of the above about a 0.05% chance of ever happening so I guess I'll settle for finally finishing the E21 to the vision that's in my head. Which would be the first car I've ever finished. I've started a lot of projects but never really finished one.

All of these are very attainable if you have the ability to make sacrifices. At the very least, attending the Rolex 24 would be considered a baby step and driving the 'ring would be the complete opposite side of the scale. Never know what the future could bring, man.

I'm aiming low right now. Seeing how far my Cavalier and Malibu go before they expire, and one day digging a path so I can at least see my Monte Carlo. Long Term build a 4x4 Camper and drive around the world.
