State Fire Marshal: Smokey Yunick's garage fire was arson
April 29, 2011|By Gary Taylor and Susan Jacobson, Orlando Sentinel
Daytona Beach Fire Department
A Monday evening fire that destroyed a garage that once belonged to the late NASCAR legend Henry "Smokey" Yunick was arson, the state Fire Marshal's Office said Friday.
The fire destroyed the building on Riverside Drive, said Nina Ashley, a spokeswoman for the Fire Marshall's Office. She would not give any details of how the fire started because of the ongoing investigation.
That should have been a national/Daytona historical designation long ago . Hello High rise condo/starbucks/
Well, it was the dealership that Smokey owned, not the actual garage. Still, it sucks that it's gone.
FWIW and AFAIK, it was Smokey and his family that didn't want any historical marker, not the city or state. The high rise that's next door is already tanking, so it's at exactly zero risk of another investor.

Yeah, that was at least partly why he had the big sale to get rid of everything before he died.
