I've been having problems recently with one hip hurting like crazy after I've been on my feet for long periods, or the morning after playing hockey.I'm 62, so it wasn't much of a surprise when the doctor told me the X-ray shows "significant arthritis" in the hip joint. I'll probably have to give up playing hockey if every Monday morning is going to feel like today and last week. Time to give up believing that I'm not aging I guess.
I have a similar pain, but never been told its arthritis. Every year I get a physical and Doc looks at my x-ray and says, "you have arthitis in your back". I never would have known.
Your turn will come, Grasshopper.

Is hip replacement surgery an option?
I have it in my lower back, and I had a shot back there that lasted about a year. You should have options that will let you continue.
I have it in the three smallest fingers of my left hand. Never figured out how or why there.. but thankfully it only seems to have an effect when up in the mountains, on an airplane, or when there is a storm coming.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. I've got it in my thumbs.
Arthritis pain can be reduced significantly by reducing or eliminating dairy products from your diet. It's actually is quite effective.
I know! I know! I would be easier to quit smoking.
If you're just going to throw in the towel and quit playing hockey because of pain, you're going to be for a future world of misery. There are exercises, medications and surgical procedures that can greatly help you continue to enjoy doing things, like playing hockey.
I take my Aleve daily, have had a shoulder rebuilt once, bunions cut off once, and keep on going. Not as spryly as before, but I keep on going.

I have psoriatic arthritis- I'm only 24, at least you old guys don't have to deal with it for that long
.
I've found that, when you do something you KNOW is gonna hurt, or will hurt the next morning, taking some NSAIDs (Naproxen is my weapon of choice) will take the edge off considerably when things do flare up. YMMV, psoriatic is a slightly different beast, but I've been doing just fine with a pretty trashed hip along with several other bad joints between that and a TNF blocker.
I'll be discussing options at my next doctor's appointment. Right now I'm just using ibuprofen regularly, never thought about trying Aleve.I intend to finish off the summer season before deciding to stop playing , or not.I'm waiting to see if this is just a bad spell I'm going through or if it's going to be a regular thing after every game. Exercising at the gym doesn't seem to bother me nearly as much for some reason and I use a half dozen different lower body machines.Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky.

No expert, but I have also heard exercise (certain types I am sure) helps with arthritis. Avoiding movement (the natural response) just makes it worse.

This, and whether it's true or not- hurting because you DID something feels way better than hurting because you didn't.
Yeah nsaids rather than ibuprofen because they have an anti inflammatory effect also while helping with the pain.
I'll jump in on this Grumpy Old Men conversation...
When I wake up, I sound like a freshly poured bowl of Rice Crispies. But activity and exercise is the best thing you can do. The stronger you make your muscles around your joints, the more stable that joint is. That said, get input from your doctor first.
Despite my multiple joint issues, I'm stronger and in better overall shape than I've been in decades. I have no doubt it keeps me from having even worse troubles than I do now.
It does. I've been dealing with it since my early 30's in my knees and shoulder. The wife has early stages of rheumetoid in the hands. I'll be 39 this december and she's 40. It's going to really suck when we get old!
Also be careful with the nsaids there can be stomach issues that go with regular use
In reply to Dr. Hess:
Does it really work, or is this more akin to snake oil?
It works for me. And it is vegetarian. Get a case at Sam's and try it, not just a bottle. It takes a while. When I run out, I can feel it act up more.

I have what has been described as severe arthritis in my neck and back. I take MSM(methylsulfonylmethane) daily and nothing else, not even aspirin. 69 and still going strong.
Ice. Ice is your buddy. I ice the crap out of my knees when they ache. I refuse to throw pills at it.
Eat the pain. The pain makes you stronger than those without it.

Pain lets you know your alive.
Pain is weakness leaving the body.
Comes w/ age I suppose and going on 56 I been feeling it. Mostly knees but ankles, hips, lower back, sciatica and neck. Sometimes it's like a travelling road show, moving place to place.
40 hour weeks w/ some weekend rest are OK but working 2-4 weeks w/o a day off bumps the discomfort level up a couple/ few notches. A script of Ibuprofen helped some but thought I was taking way too much just to get through my work weeks. That can't be good for you in the long run.
After one of my worst weeks a co-worker recommended an old school bone cruncher chiropractor. They got me tweaked back in shape head to toe. Then came the surprise, a few samples of Bio-Freeze, that mentholly topical gel stuff. Pffft, gimmick I thought. Once I used up the samples I bought a 4 oz. tube for about $12 at a local medical supply house. Never looked back, never took Ibuprofen again, it's been over 6 months now. I swear by this stuff.
