To me, if you can reach from the seats into the "boot" area, and there is a top hinged hatch above the "boot" area, regardless if it is two doors or four, it's a hatchback. Don't care what the shape looks like.. the shape doesn't change the fact that it has a hatch - hence hatchback. Under this test, the Firebird surely is a hatchback.

To me, if you have to get out and walk around to access the "boot" area (ie, the the trunk) it's a coupe (2dr) or sedan (4dr).

I will admit confusion regarding the words saloon and salon, though.

This is entertaining.

Funny you mention Ferrari... I lust for a 550 Maranello. But I have to admit that lust was tempered a bit when I found out what looks like it should be a hatch is really a small trunk and a cargo shelf behind the front seats. I still want one in the worst way, but if had a real lift-back... or hatchback... or whatever... I would want it even more. It's the practical/engineer in me...

The best part of this thread is not that the OP is right or wrong (he is right btw), but the fact that everyone is being ridiculously obtuse about the definition.

OP says hatchback. What he means to say is "car that looks like all of the one I put up pictures of". It just so happens, that society in general (not a whole bunch of pedantic hate mongerers like yourselves :p ) thinks civic hatchback when someone says hatchback.

They do not think Integra, or MX6, or Firebird.

So, everyone arguing that all those cars are hatchbacks, I guess I'll give it to you that you are right... but most people think along the lines of the OP. Which I agree with. You're all a bunch of dummies

To me, when the back light goes beyond 45 degrees, it stops being a back and becomes a top. Perhaps we can call the others hatchtops?
