Wife says, "I want to paint the bedroom". Turned into lots of sheetrock crack repair, then primer, then two coats of paint. Not bad. I'm thinking I got off easy. Nope. Yesterday she comes home with 12 boxes of new hardwood flooring. Says, you can just install this on top of the old flooring, right? Its prefinished so it shouldn't be much work, right? Old house with balloon framing, and the undersized dimensional 2X6 floor joists have not faired well over the last 120 years causing at least a 3/4" dip in the middle of the room. Looks and feels worse than what you can measure under a taught string pulled across the room. So it looks like today is going to be spent, ripping up old oak flooring and a mill run subfloor. That will allow me to sister the old 2X6s with new ones and give the floor some much needed strength. It will also provide a flat plain to work on. I get to carry 8 sheets of plywood and a pile of 2X6s up the stairs, then down the hallway filled with the contents of our bedroom. Good thing I scheduled myself a short week because of the holiday and all.
Rip out old oak flooring for pre-finished laminate? Yeah...

How does your wife react when you dump a project on her without notice or asking?
I know I would've reacted extremely poorly in your shoes here.

it's called pregnancy.
God I sounded like a feminist there.
Just got done with demo on most of the floor. Man was that nasty. Anybody need 5 pounds of cut nails? Oak floor didn't cover the entire room because years ago we moved some walls around. There was an area that was just particle board. Knew it was there, but didn't care when we installed the carpet. She wants to go back to hardwood, and patching it in was going to be a bugger. I'm the one that decided that if we are going to do new hardwood, then the floor had better be flat. Ripping up the old stuff makes more sense than adding another 3/4" of material, plus trying to level it off. She brought home some 3 1/4" wide oak that has a soft yellow brown color. We have 3 1/4" fir in the rest of the upstairs, so at least the width of the boards matches. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the rest of the upstairs floor is on her list. Ever since I rebuilt the staircase with new oak treads, she has been looking at the rest of the floors in the house with a little disdain.

At this point I'd start googling polyandry. Maybe look on Angies list. I mean she'll still love you and the other guy gets the Honey-do list.

Oh, I think that there's a lesson to be learned there.

If you look at what time I posted that, it should explain the lack of reading comprehension. No human should be up that early on a Sunday.
