On my way home from work I stopped off at a gas station for a diet Pepsi and stretch my legs. Two guys were watching th neTV over the register which was running a story about the Luger that was killed at the Olympics. one of them turned and said "What the hell, it snows for two days in Georgia and they get their own Olympic team?"

Saw the replay earlier tonight... Don't care to ever see it again.

As I type this, I'm watching a replay of the opening ceremony. The Georgian Olympic team entered the games with only 8 athletes. That had to be incredibly difficult for the remaining seven to participate in the opening ceremonies.

I saw it on NBC last night. When I saw him lose control and start to leave the surface of the track, I thought they would stop the video. Then as he's flying over the edge of the track, I thought 'now they're going to stop the video'. Then he's in the air between the track and the poles, and I thought 'Holy crap, they're really letting the video go a long ways before stopping it.' And then he hits the pole, and they didn't stop the video. Then they showed Kumaritashvili's bloody face as the paramedics worked on him. Then they replayed him hitting the pole 4 more times. Was that really necessary? It did nothing to further the story and was really just there for the shock factor. Sure, my view was behind the pole he hit, so I didn't see the full impact, but it still seemed un-called for showing the entire video of the accident. One thing about this accident, I bet the ratings for the luge, skeleton and bobsled events are going to be a lot higher than last Olympics.

I am reminded of Gordon Smiley's crash during qualifying for the 1982 (?) Indy 500. WAY too much...

Among the myriad of questions and repulsions that I have over this whole thing I have two observations that are important:

1: Wally, I heard what you heard. Ignorance is a disease and all every disease must be eradicated.

2: Bare I-beams on the edge of a race track? Really?

So Wally where do you live that you had those mountains of intellect?

Pray your daughter doesn't marry into the gene pool.

I haven't seen the crash, nor do I care too. I think its a disgusting attempt to drum up ratings by showing that more than once.

They played that tragedy over and over again on one of the major new channels. It was really sad to see. The luge is an insane sport to begin with. 80mph on a huge double ice skate? WTF is up with that. Looks like the padding wasn't high enough there, but really, if they were to make any sport safe, they'd have to completely enclose the thing in padding.

Still, it seems like this particular course has caused quite a few issues even before the death. Yikes.

8 remaining, The one that crashed was the 9th. He did not even live to see the opening ceremony. :(
