Good idea, I already have one, I'll bring it and have a look next time...
At the shop today, checked around locally and my Amazon special tap is the only one I can get this month, so we'll have to either weld on an extension or remove the crank spacer and rig up something to catch shavings so that they don't fall into the timing cover. A local shop could fabricate the tap but that probably won't save money. No clear thread damage visible through the cheap endoscope, note that the aspect ratio is skewed in the screenshot.
Good news, the thread repair was a success, the shorter tap was usable with the spacer removed and a swarf-catching arrangement rigged up. Thanks everyone!
