I agree, but the people doing that are obliviots (oblivious idiots) and/or will tell you that since they are going slow they are safer than all those maniacs speeding by them.

That's my personal #2. I remember being taught to always take the near lane in "drivers ed" circa 1987.. then signal and change once you've turned onto the new road. I'm curious if one of our resident LEO's can tell us if that is still "the law"?

Here are the rest of my top 4.

#1 I approach an intersection with a green light but the lane ahead is clogged up, and stopped - so I stay back to keep the intersection clear -- then some joker from the right makes a right turn [on red] directly into the space I just left open.. thereby plugging up the intersection some more.

#3 aftermarket blue headlamps

#4 aftermarket "altezzas" and "blackout tails"

Sure enough there was a car in the right lane (where you should normally be if you aren't overtaking). Three completely unoccupied lanes two his left but he didn't move over. Now obviously he isn't required to by law, but a little bit of courtesy goes a long way.

Sorry...but I have no sympathy for you here.

On ramps are usually long enough to adjust your speed (you as the merger) to compensate.

Someone driving in the right lane when they should be is a gift...don't complain about it.

in NC it's very much the law ... my 88 yo Mom was failed on her first try for her drivers test for that very reason ... I had drilled it into her ... I thought ... but under the pressure she goofed ... the next time she did fine ... they gave her a 5 yr license .... she and I both know that she'll give up driving long before that

In reply to ClemSparks: Ever driven any expressways in Chicago? Some ramps have barely enough room to switch from expressway to ramp or vice versa. My drivers Ed teacher said that the Dan Ryan is the worst designed expressway in the country cause the on and off ramps are so close together. Now they have changed some of them over the years but there are some in the city's west side that are still bad, right around UIC for those that know the Chicago area.

In reply to ClemSparks: They were doing about 80mph in a 65mph zone (double the fine) and I had sped up to 65 mph on the ramp long before it even joined with the highway. I smoothly slipped in behind them and it really wasn't an issue. But it was a lack of anticipation and defensive driving on their part not to move over. Clearly moving over to the middle lane isn't necessary nor required by law, just the sensible polite, and safe course of action. It would have cost them no time, and made it a safer situation for both of us. From the other driver's perspective: What if I hadn't checked my mirrors and pulled out in front of them with a closing speed of 15mph? Of course, after they move to the middle lane for entrance ramp traffic, they should move back to the right lane. This situation happens alot in New Jersey where people are driving well over the speed limit but won't let merging traffic in (doing the speed limit). Also people will sometimes drive up the shoulder which is then replaced by the merge ramp and have shall we say an interesting time with merging traffic.

are they the cloverleaf style, where you merge as others exit?

..add those to my list.

5.) People who don't believe in the zipper merge by: blocking one lane of traffic, not letting you in, giving you the finger, honking, etc.

As long as by "zipper merge" you aren't referring to passing 100 cars that have already zipper merged to knowingly drive to the very end of the merge zone and then turn on their signal and demand that the seas part because they are smarter/more important/time is more valuable than all others, I agree.

Now, on occasion, I have been unknowingly caught out and have had to rely on "the kindness of strangers" but I recognize that I was the one asking the favor.

Sorry, I see this every day in my commute. A very high percentage of drivers know exactly what they are doing.

In reply to Adrift: Yeah, I know what your saying. Its especially annoying when people bastardize zipper merging by forcing their way to the front of a congested one lane exit.

They aren't doing it because they think their time is more valuable than anyone elses...they're doing it because using all the lane until there is a lane closure is the most efficient way to handle the situation.

I know it's uncomfortable and there is this issue about people trying to be polite...but merging early for a lane closure really only results in people getting mad while others drive by them to merge at the point where merging is necessary.

I recommend the book "Traffic" for those who have not yet read it.

Around me the truckers generally stop that zipper merge issue pretty quickly.......if lined up before that point, it'll go quicker than a free for all at the merge point.

In response to the original idea of the thread, I am now going to add my own hatred of referencing coilover suspension as just "Coils." I evidentally don't speak hipster, jive, californian, hard parker, or wtf ever language that is acceptable to use in.

18 wheelers can do this because of size an anonymity (you can't see into their trucks, and you can't muscle them off the road). It's a sociological experiment/phemomenon.

I don't agree with you that it works better when they do this. I mean...it works just the same as if everyone just goes to the point where the lane ends and merges one-for-one. What they are doing is just forcing that queue earlier. In the end, they're making it so everyone merges late (as I argue...and evidence proves...we should do).

I also argue it's not a "free for all" at the merge point. Just taking turns the way we learned to do as toddlers.

I attended UIC in 1982-1983. I was addicted to the hot dogs over at Al's Beef on Taylor Street. I would walk over and get a hot dog/fries and stand at this counter and eat it and fight with everyone for elbow room.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice...

I also argue it's not a "free for all" at the merge point. Just taking turns the way we learned to do as toddlers.

If most adults weren't mental toddlers, that theory might work in practice, too. But it just doesn't - not anywhere I've ever driven on the eastern seaboard, at any rate.

Yeah...theory and practice don't always line up.

[edit: I actually typed this post before seeing yours, Duke...just didn't hit "add post" for a while. So yeah...I acknowledge that.]

I still contend that it's a sociological thing that makes it not work as well as it should to merge late.

People who accelerate slowly up to a high cruising speed need to be put up against the wall and shot. When you're on a typical 4-lane divided road carrying any traffic at all, they are ALWAYS in your berking way, with no possibility of getting around them. Makes me grind my teeth and wish for anti-stupidity missiles.
