MOPAR Torque Flite 727. I have never had an auto transmission apart before but I may scatter this one all over the floor. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Is this a fairly simple job? Where is a good parts source?

Things to have:
big clean work area
manual or exploded view of the tranny
feeler gauge(especially for measuring the clutch packs)

Pay attention to the clutch disc and metal plate order as you take the clutch pack apart. Make sure you soak the new clutch disks before putting them in the clutch pack.

Its been a few years since I did this in school so I can't remember the places to get the rebuild kits.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. There are ways to check the front pump but I have totally forgotten.

It is simplistically complex. Rebuilding autos isn't hard, but they will make you pull your hair out.

In addition to above:

Clutch spring compressor or swing past somewhere that will allow you to do it.
Specialized snap ring pliers not available at the parts store.
Set of picks. The set from HF for 99 cents on coupon work fine.
You can get a seal installer tool or just use a .003/.004 feeler gauge
Round spark plug gapper from PepAdvReillyZone for a buck. This is the inside trick to setting clutch pack clearances without having to fumble around with feeler gauges.
Slide hammer for the pump, but I think you can use a hammer and screwdriver on the backside will break the seal on it.
A CASE of brake cleaner to clean up everything.
A tub of Vaseline to assemble everything so it doesn't ruin itself on startup or assembly.
A bag of rags. You will use a bunch of them.
You will want a master kit minus steels, flex band, filter, and a repair book from the local trans part place. Oh and for the kit you will need to know if it is pre or post 69 or 71. I can't remember the year break.

I am sure there is more but that is the super basic starter kit.

Oh and you do NOT have to soak clutch plates.

No kidding. They are cheap, depends on what you get, but figure $120 easy, and they serve no other purpose. This piece of equipment is probably the only piece I am missing, besides a nice bushing driver set and various sizers/installers for specific transmissions, from rebuilding at home. I have everything else on my above list.

So, if we just send you the transmission and a few hundred bucks, you can do it for us? Opportunity is beating down your door, my friend.

I have 7 of them of my own that are beating down my door that I can resell....

Last one I did was a 727 for a 66 Charger, $400 including rebuild kit, but no converter. But that was when I had the access to everything (working at a dealership). Oh and I had to redo it when the direct clutches got smoked from the junkass manual VB. Replaced the VB out of my own pocket to make the guy happy. Hell, I even went to HIS house and installed the re-rebuilt trans.

We just did turbo 350s and had a tranny dyno we had to put it on.

Oh, as ranger said, good snap ring pliers is a must.

I know I paid $20 EACH for the 4 or 5 of them that are needed, yes that is right, $100 in total. I bought them from the MAC guy for most of them, and SnapOn for the others.

so, uh, any experience with Ford 4R70W rebuilds? My 'sploder is starting to slip on the 1-2 and I'm weighing options....I had considered buying a used one and rebuilding it myself

4R70's require those specialized sizers/installers I mentioned earlier to the tune of $250 for the set. Can you get it done without them? Yes, but afterwards you will feel like the monkey phuckin a football.... They are worth it, but in the same breath, no.

Sound like a shop rebuild. I don't need any more monkey-football offspring in my life.

The 4 "pliers" in question... I also have a huge set of internal/external snap ring plier set from Cornwell.

If you're a patient cheapskate like me three or four big C-clamps will work and actually have a chance of being useful for other projects later.

You'll need to log in to post.
