I've got to go to Omaha for a day next week to help put on a class for our company. I'm going to drive up from Tulsa vs dealing with layover/car rental/etc.
I plan on stopping in Kansas City on Wednesday on the way up to get some legit KC BBQ.
A guy here at work has recommended Bryant's, any other suggestions?
If it matters, I don't particularly care for ribs. Brisket is good, pulled pork is best.
I've got an interview in from KC today. If I'm still working when he's headed out, I'll ask.
Bryants is highly recommended around here.
Gates is good as well.
Jack Stack is supposed to be very good.
Plenty of hole-in-the-wall joints though.
What time Wednesday are you passing through? I'm in St. Joseph, and would be happy to host lunch in St. Joe or dinner in KC.

Thank you for this incredibly insightful and helpful post!
How long are you in Omaha? I know of some good places to grab a great beer, and or Hamburger. Not necessarily at the same spot, however. Hit me up, if you want to get together!
Come down to Texas to get some real BBQ. That Kansas city stuff is just and excuse to sugar coat something.

Coming in Wednesday afternoon and leaving Thursday afternoon, however, I would love to grab a beer Wednesday night.
I'll actually be staying across the river in Council Bluffs, but no biggie.

No problem, I'm here all day
I tried kcmo and kcks last time out there.....wasn't impressed. As discussed before with barbeque, opinions differ wildly.....so my post will either be proven right or wrong.
I did go to one of the places the history channel visited though, can't remember the name
^Yeah, it may not end up being my favorite, but I'd still like to give it a try.

Omaha meetup, you say?
I'm game. You guys just pick a spot with some decent food and good beer selection.

Theorello's Jack Stack is great, any location. I also like Wyandotte BBQ (or Whyandotte #2), Rosedale BBQ is good for lunches, Zarda's is supposed to be decent but I've never been. Not a big fan of Gates or Arthur Bryant's.
The sides at Jack Stack are probably the best part!
OKLAHOMA JOE'S.
Let me say that again.
OKLAHOMA JOE'S.
Yes, it is in a gas station.
Whenever I have gone, there's generally a line out the door by 11:30. It's worth every minute of the wait.
Bryant's, Gates, and Jack Stack are all more than worth your time. The original Gates and Bryants are not in good neighborhoods, so be careful after dark.
I went to Jack Stacks 2 weeks ago.
Good and I was stuffed and it seemed pricey. It all is the same to me.

They just built an Oklahoma Joe's down here in Tulsa, haven't been yet, but it's on my to-do list shortly......so I'd like to go somewhere I can only get in KC.

A smattering of everything. Sauces tend to be a little sweeter, pork tends to be favored over beef (although KC does a lot of beef), and we tend to have less of a chip on our shoulder about it than Texas.
I associate KC with a chili pepper taste in the sauce I dont find elsewhere. I will be in Memphis in a couple weeks enjoying those wonderful dry rub ribs. I dont know if there is a such thing as a bad style of BBQ.

If BBQ was a nation, Kansas City would be it's capitol city.
KC is the BBQ capitol because the American Royal BBQ competition is here, and draws the absolute finest minds in BBQ here annually. Now, to those in southern states, I won't say our BBQ is any better or worse than yours. It is distinct and delicious on its own merits.
I'll also second the recommendation for Oklahoma Joe's. I love Bryants, Gates, and I have enjoyed a couple others, but OK Joe's is my favorite. I work down the road from the gas station location. My coworkers and I used to go every Friday. The line was long, but that was ok. Now that it's gotten some TV and food magazine love, the line is beyond what we are willing to wait in for lunch on a work day.
They also have, bar none, the best french fries I've ever had. Don't add salt to them they are perfectly seasoned.
Also, get a Z-man, and ask for it on Texas Toast bread. Best sandwich ever.
