Figured out after No Shave November that my scraggly fail beard looks acceptable at a #3 length, so 3/8".
Trimming my face with a full on Wahl hair trimmer sucks. Too big and not cordless.
What beard trimmer is good? Needs to be able to get to 3/8". Many i'm seeing only do around 13/64".
Phillips QT4050/4070 seem to get gopd reviews on Amazon and seem to do what i want. Anything cheaper that will hold up decently and still do what i need?
Wahl Li+ As low as $30. The adjustable guide has 3/8 somewhere in it's range, I use #4 out of 6(I'm not certain if these # match standard lengths). After nearly 2 months, it is still on the factory charge. Quick interchangeable heads include wide hair clipper, narrow mustache/nose hair, and electric razor.
Last I tried they all were too weak, so I use a corded wahl trimmer.

I'm only seeing up to 3/16" in there. That'd be about a #1.5.
It also has a 6 position adjustable guide.

yeah, it's got to be corded or you will end up going to work with a half saved mug. AND WHAT ABOUT THOSES NOSE HAIRS??? there I said it, you were all thinking it somebody just needed to put it on the table.

Pluck it out with needle nose pliers
get one with a vacuum feature that collects the trimmings - well at least a few of them.

Machetes are for Bob Costas. Beat the whiskers in with a 4 lb. sledge hammer & chew them off from the inside.

I'm still confused as to why you'd want to shorten a beard. Someone explain.
So...great story time.
As a small, weak man who can't grow facial hair, I bought a Wahl trimmer to take care of some, lets just say, other areas.
Related note, I was at a swap meet and I bought a complete Corvette C5 interior less seats and dashboard for $30. It was the end of the weekend, it was raining, and dude wanted to go home and drink beer. So I put the parts in the corner of my spare bedroom and start selling them on Craigs and Corvette Forum. It took a while to sell some of the trunk panels and in the mean time my cat had turned them into her scratching post. I sold one, then pulled it out and it was totally effed. She had pulled the carpet pretty bad and it was covered in cat hair. Black cat - black carpet, could have been worse.
So I pull the hair off and it looks ok but still not good. I start taking a scissors to the panel, about 2' x 1', and it cleans up the pulled out carpet and looks great. So I get my ball trimmer, shave off the pulled out fibers on the panel, and it looks awesome!
I box it up and send it out. I get A+ Would Buy Again feedback from the gentleman who bought my ball trimmed interior.
But thats not the best part.
I was relaying this story to our purchasing guy at work and got right to the part where I told him what I used to trim the panel, and he blurted out, "Let me guess - you used your ball trimmer". I guess great minds think alike.

Right?
Mine gets itchy if I let it get too long. Plus, I like the look of a neatly trimmed beard. My wife would probably kick me out if I went all Duck Dynasty.
I have this guy. It's cheap, adjustable, cordless, and works well: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-QT4000-42-BeardTrimmer/dp/B00ARF42D4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423432319&sr=8-2&keywords=beard+trimmer
I have really terrible coverage and it's not thick enough to really even look anything better than dirty and homeless if i let it go long. Think like... Keanu Reeves, but worse.
I had it about 2" long from No Shave November before i finally gave up. The longer it got, the thinner and worse it looked.
