Our dear cat of 17+ years, Trixie, ran out of kidneys and good days about 6 weeks ago and we upheld our end of the deal. Not easy, but we'd been readying ourselves over her last year. If you ever have a cat develop renal failure and it's detected early enough (They drink a lot and pee a lot) the vet will suggest you administer subcutaneous hydration - it's not hard and it really makes the cat feel better. It's not an extreme heroic measure or anything. She had another whole good year and it only takes a couple minutes every other day.
In any case, it sure seemed quiet around here without a cat. We lasted about 3 weeks before we took home the 2 orphan fur balls in the picture below.
So why "Berkely" you ask?
We've been trying names since we got 'em home, and we've rejected the lot for various reasons. Then last night my wife says 'Berkeley!", so I ask what's wrong.
"No, for the boy cat (the tuxedo one w/ the cute nose-spot)..."Berkely!" - it's a cute name, it sounds right for calling a cat - Berrrrrrrrrr-kley! - and the GRM thing makes it funny" she says.
So, tentatively, he's named Berkely.
We're still not sure about her. Ideas?
EDIT: And by "Berkeley" we mean just that. We're not naming our cat the F word...
It's like a mild case of turrets in here.
The tuxedo looks like a George and I would call the grey one Bunny.
I named my tuxedo cat Phydaux

I just want to respond to the implied question in the title with, "Yes, as often as possible."
(I so did not expect a thread about critters when I clicked on this link.)
I've always wanted to do the Simpsons thing: get an all black cat and name it 'snowball'.
One of ours is called Jensen Button. It makes watching F1 a lot of fun.
Gray one looks like a Russian Blue... I would call her "Spot"...
No real reason except I've had three cats that looked similar. One was Susie, and her daughter was Bob. The other one was Spot.
Since all tuxedo cats are crazy, it sort of works on multiple levels.

I've been saving the name Patina for the right pet. Maybe Rusty if it is a male.

The grey one looks just like our adapted cat, Nitro. I think we call him kitty in Cartman's voice more, then E36 M3head or dick.

If your wife is supportive of the GRM connection on the name "Berkeley", then the female should be "Costas".
That was pretty obvious.

i'm pretty sure my last cat had renal failure (strokes) and i'm also pretty darn sure my new cat has got it as well. The vet always says "she's a healthy weight" but it seems to me that cats should get fat if they have constant food, and she's got constant food and she's always been skinny.
That and the constant needs to be in the sink.
Possible names for her:
Margo (looks like a Margo to me)
Lada
Natasia
Tiamat
Shiva, Destroyer of Toes (or Toilet Paper or some other thing)

That's not renal failure. That's hyperthyroidism. If they eat like a horse and don't gain any weight, then their thyroid is overdriving their metabolism. That's easily medicatable, and should be, because eventually they will burn up their own muscle mass because they can't get enough calories from the food bowl.
Most cats aren't like most dogs. Presented with an unlimited supply of food, they will not eat until their stomachs burst. They'll have a dozen small snacks throughout the day, but rarely much more than they need. I have a cat that's 10 years old, in perfect health, and never weighed more than 6 pounds in her entire life.

On the original topic, cats kind of have to name themselves. I'm sure something appropriate for the grey girl will present itself in a week or two. Though Margo sounds pretty good.
Our two previous cats were Zanardi and Senna. I loved those names! After losing those guys it didn't take long for another cat in need of a home to find us. We named her Indy. Since then there's been another addition but she came with a name already...Reese.
I think the tuxedo one should be named after a Bond villain. He's in a tux and he looks like a crazy troublemaker
The gray one's so cute! ^_^ You should give her a nice girl's name. Maybe Sabine if you want to plant a gearhead easter egg?
Best cat we ever had was named Mouse. Dubbed that because he couldn't meow when we got him, he squeaked instead. Died many moons ago.
Doesn't matter what you name it. It will be "Damn Cat!!!" at some point.

my sister had one left on her back porch … what's weird about that is that the cat was (per the vet) only 2, maybe 3 days old … she has no idea how it got there ….
it had some kinda strange breathing bit .. where she'd sorta gulp a breath every so often … hence the name .. hiccup
