JEEZ I can't win for loosing. Yesterday my wife gives me the okay to buy 600.00 worth of suspension parts, and today I somehow managed to punch a hole in my oil pan on the way to work. I'm assuming it was a rock in my driveway, ( I live in the country on a dirt road) but I came out for lunch at work and there's a HUGE puddle under the front of my car. Low and behold, 1/8in hole in the oil pan. So would a hammer, JB weld, and a new pan gasket be GRM or redneck? Or does anyone have a spare oil pan for a 96 protege lx 1.5 manual tranny laying around they wanna sell?

Gah

I've never done it myself but, I've heard of a lot of people that have fixed oil pan punctures with JB Weld.

Who care if it's GRM or redneck or what you call it if it's inexpensive and it works.

True...Not as bad as I first thought, apparently Advance auto parts lists a replacement for 35.00 + shipping, going to talk to them after work, I don't mind going the JB weld route, but if they can get me a replacement tomorrow morning at 9 am, then I'm all for it. faster than the 24 hour cure time anyway, and I don't have to worry about it ever coming out.

My Town Cars have had a couple of rusted through pans, you can drain it, clean it and glue it, force the glue inside so it anchors the bond. If you do it right it will outlast the car, My last one did another 80K before forced retirement from another failure.

NB My pans are steel, is yours cast aluminum?

I'd pull the pan, MIG it up, grind smooth, bake in the oven (garage oven, the spouse would really disapprove of oil pan in the house), Rustoleum paint, bake some more, put it back on (GRM). Or, get a short bolt, put some JB weld on it, ram it in the hole, let it cure (Ghetto).

I've got an entire '97 Protege you can have for $35 and drive it home in second gear. It's automotic, though.

It's in my avatar photo...

I'd take it off and weld it.

I've actually got a VW 1.8t engine had the oil pan JB Welded for free, because the JB Weld came loose and started to leak while they were driving it, and they didn't notice until there were two giant holes in the block from one of the rods deciding it wanted out.

It's grassroots if you can't afford / find a new oil pan or if you're just doing it as a quick fix. Otherwise it's redneck/ghetto (depending on the vehicle )

GRM or Redneck? It's probably a little of both. When my roommate dropped my Buell on its side a few months ago (70 miles from home) and the shifter poked a hole in the transmission primary cover, I made my brother run to the hardware store and get some JB Weld for it before he ran home to get some sleep before his night shift at work. Then I smeared some of it on the hole (which was leaking, albeit slowly), hopped on her bike, and the two of us went and got ice cream while it dryed.

It turned out to be kind of a fun time, actually. Try it. If it holds, save some money for a little while and then buy a new oil pan a little later on.

Clem, that's a LLOOONNG ride, in second gear. Thanks for the offer though. Sorry about the spelling, and it's 65.00 for the pan, the 35.00 was a transmission pan. DOH that's what I Get for being in a serious hurry to get back to work, and being pissed off while trying to read. oh well, gonna pull the pan tomorrow, take it to my cousin's place and weld it up. Got to thinking about it at work, and remembered this stuff. EP-200 We sell the small tube for 3 and change at work, and figured I would give it a shot. It's earned a place in the trunk tool box, quarter sized hunk, knead it till started to harden, pushed it up into the hole, and smoothed it out around it. Took a walk to the parts store for 2 gallons of oil, (figured I would have change the oil after all this is said and done) piddled around the "accessories" section of the store for a bit, hiked back to the car, it was hard enough I couldn't chip it away from the pan with a screwdriver, so I poured in a gallon of oil and babied it home, checked it halfway home and when I got home, dry as a bone, if the pan wasn't dented so bad I would leave it just to see how long it lasts, but I'm afraid the dent is partially blocking the pickup tube, so gonna drop it and fix it right,

On a side note, after a long day at work, (ended up working almost 11 hours when scheduled for 8) and a long ride home (was that a knock? damn is that getting louder, knew I should have had that muffler fixed) I came home and decided to blow off some steam by working on the challenger. pulled almost 100lbs if not a bit more out of it tonight.
