I would say something of the Saturn flavor (Ion or S-Series), Cobalt or Focus hatchback. A quick search on cl shows 5 speed Cobalts down in the sub $3k price range now. Mrs. Dx had a Cobalt sedan when we first met and it wasn't terrible to be in.

The kiddo has had her 2003 Ion3 for about a year and so far it's been a great appliance. It is an automatic, I don't think I've ever seen one with a manual. My only gripe is the around town mileage could be better, it hovers around 20.
