What are the best CHEAP driving lights? I'm looking for something small & compact, yet still throws a lot of light.

Used Hella 500s and good wiring.

I'll be honest, I had two cars that I had the cheapo Autozone driving lights that I wired correctly and I had them for several years with no problems except a burnt out bulb.

Being the curious type who has never had aftermarket fog lights, what is "wired correctly" exactly? Just wondering.

most of the kits come prewired with relay and all but only have 16-18ga wire between the power source and the actual lights. you can wire it up with better wire/shorter runs for less power loss. or you could do an HID conversion on it with one of the chinese conversion kits. my 500ffs throw out a ton of light

I've run a few pairs of cheapys over the years.

The ~3"x5" rectangular(looks like the OE Bosch and Marchal from the '80s) Blazers from Walmart, I think I paid $25 for the kit. Very bright, but no fluting in the lens and no reflector over the bulb means poor distance and pattern, and you'll blind oncoming traffic. No fuse or relay in the kit, and the switch will get hot as hell if run that way. That said, they held up great to daily use for two years and stayed on the car when I sold it. Next owner reported several years later that they still worked fine and neither of us so much as replaced a bulb.

Hella 500 spots: I liked 'em, would buy them again.

Hella FF500 spots: better pattern than the 500s, less useful as general lighting and better as auxiliary high beams(which their intended purpose). Good for the money. Wish I'd gotten the fog pattern with amber bulbs.

OP, what's your budget? You might be able to get into some Blazer Projectors... They're pretty awesome.

I have always just cut off the connectors from the stock fogs.. soldered them onto the aftermarket ones, and mounted everything up like stock

And yes.. the Hella FF500s are best as aux lights.. I use them because the stock headlights on the Classic 900 suck so badly

I was hoping for sub $30. The Hella's at 5" are too big

PS, They are for

Tiny lights are mainly good at pissing off oncoming traffic, and looking ricey. Bigger is better.

Yes, Hella 500s are big. However, they are designed for lighting up things a couple miles down the road, not accessorizing a cut-spring Civic.

I found a new pair on eBay for $40. I triple-checked to make sure it wasn't for one unit.
