Ditto here on the Mossberg 500. Racking a round in a 12 gauge is usually enough to deter any further intrusion by a person with less than honorable intentions.

To me, a weapon for home defense needs to be fairly small, easy to hide, very easy to maneuver quickly, and hold enough ammo to get the job done. This meets my criteria.

If you like JMB and heavy, short autos... then you'll like this:

But that one sits in the safe and the actual workhorse of the family is my Mossberg 500 I paid $75 for 15 years ago. That and the fullsize 1911 in that pic.

What extension did you use on that and was there any modification needed? I am getting ready to chop the barrel on mine over winter and I think trim the stock a bit. I am torn on leaving the finish completely worn out as it is or if I want to refinish it in some fashion. It was a military issue one though furniture and barrel have been changed at some point.

Remy 870 +3 ext. You will need ~1/4" spacer because the threads are longer on the tube than they are on the extension. I found a small crack at the back of the receiver recently. I know it needs a new bushing and return spring but I need to get it checked out by a 'smith. Here's what it looks like:

Is that the one that has a leather buffer in the back of the receiver? I read an article in SGN on one like that. The leather gets worn out, bolt slams into the back of the receiver.

In reply to Dr. Hess:

IDK, but that crack is definitely due to a worn out recoil mechanism....

No leather. It does use a wood dowel to hold the rear recoil spring though. According to the serial numbers and the safety INSIDE the trigger guard, it puts this thing around 1909 for manufacture. Not bad for a 105 year old firearm.
