Unfortunately after years of apartments I no longer have air compressor/tools and am in need of an impact for upcoming project. Could buy another setup but feel cost vs use wouldn't be wise decision.
Anyone have any experience renting an impact gun from Lowe's/home depot/sunbelt? An electric one would suit my needs fine. Just asking what/who was easiest to deal with.
HD has been okay for the stuff I've rented there, though that's mostly been lawn tools.
I've actually found a couple of our local places more convenient, but that's a combo of similar service and better location, so may not be applicable for you.
How many ft lbs do you need?
Can you run an extension cord?
$40 gets you a HF 110V 230 ft lb 1/2" driver.

Forget exact specs but need to remove crank bolt, maybe 120ish. I tend to stay way from the harbor freight stuff thiugh
For a crank bolt (unless Honda, or other reverse rotation), you can usually brace a breaker bar to a frame rail, and use the starter to break the bolt loose. I've successfully done so many times.
Now, for an unsolicited opinion. Lots of HF stuff will do that one job just fine, usually many more. I bought a $20 hammer drill for one job. Can't kill it. I do understand your sentiment, though.
No rental stores in your area?
Some auto parts stores have free tool rental, but I don't know if they have impact wrenches.

+1 to this. Did it on a Subaru once for a timing belt job and it was a piece of cake. MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS NOT GOING TO START. Remove the spark plug wires, unplug the fuel injectors, whatever. Breaker bar + cheater pipe braced against the ground, one quick tap on the key, done.

+2 on this. Done it many a time myself.
I bought the large corded HF impact gun for $32 strictly to remove lug nuts from my skid steer here at the house. I had to do it one time by hand when I got a flat and that was enough for me. Works so well that I picked up a second one to keep at the shop to remove the stubborn stuff rather than the skin on my knuckles. Well worth the money IMO.
My HF impact is the only tool that hasn't run out of smoke. I'd be ok buying another.
Honestly I agree the corded HF is surprisingly stout. Had a student use one for everything in our truck shop and despite it being really loud it worked really well. Hard to beat for the price. I do think he had the up model that costs a bit more.
Well after thinking and looking at rental rates at various places I'm leaning towards just being the HF unit. Reality it won't cost much more then renting, and I'll have for future projects.
Ive seen videos on using a breaker bar and cranking engine over, but knowing my luck it'll fly off, hit a police car, bounce off and hit a baby in the head.
Now let's just hope Rock Auto doesn't send me the wrong parts..
What's the crank bolt on? For the dreaded Honda crank bolt, I've found the Milwaukee 2767-20 coupled with the Lisle 19mm crank bolt (high mass) socket works great. If Honda, you'll also need the 50mm tool to hold the crank in one position so you can tighten it up. For tightening the crank bolt, I use a 3/4" 4' long breaker bar, and two 12" long 3/4" Klutch extensions so I can crank on the breaker bar outside the wheel well. The torque spec is something like 47, but then you add a 60 degree rotation.
This is the one that I picked up and with a coupon was pretty cheap.
I have the Bauer 1100 ft/lb Electric Impact. It is worth every penny it costs.
One of the few HF tools I would highly recommend.
