They just SAY they are illegally racing. All of what is on TV is legal (e.g. you can see an ambulance in the backgrounds sometimes)
They do trailer cars to real street races though from what I have seen, but I think they do try to keep them at least technically street legal. I suspect they try to get them off an on the trailers as fast as possible though since they could be easily ticketed while off. Generally though, these real races seem to be in very out of the way places (good warning when cops appear) or are in areas where shooting people with machine guns is more of a priority (South Central LA).

Fuel cars run roots blowers because they have to. If they could, you'd see screw chargers, turbos, and/or nitrous.
Interesting. Is there a reason why? (rules? physics?)
Clearly it's not cost
Because the blower takes more power to provide boost than a street hemi made back in the day.
Also, they would absolutely not use nitrous, a fuel car would slow down with nitrous. They would absolutely use turbos, and you would see a lot of people die very quickly if they did, because the power difference is pretty significant.
Not fuel cars, but guys like WJ know about turbo's already.
Read this carefully:
HRM: How much power could a Pro Stock V-8 make with EFI and a turbo?
WJ: A mildly turbocharged Pro Stock motor on gasoline makes about 2,500 horsepower, and certainly in the mid-3,000s on methanol.

Is pro stock still 600 cu in? (shows how long I have been out of drag racing.) That is alot cubes getting the squeeze....

Glad he is OK, but on what planet is that illegal street racing? Show up with a slick tired, wheelie bar car in a hauler and unload it on a track, errr..I mean straight stretch of road with good light and now a camera crew.
In the stupidity of my youth I did street racing. You showed up in it, you drove off in it and you didn't go back to where you started to settle up.
I call bullE36 M3
People have been trailering cars to street racers for several years. Its just not usually 8 cars and a camera crew. Alot of the big money street guys will admit they cant drive there car anywere. Half are using filled blocks and running no cooling systems.
Oh Ok so this isn't illegal street racing this is semi-pros (hey they get paid don't they) racing drag cars illegally on a street.
Yeah, if I was the Sheriff in that town, I would make my budget in one night....cars, haulers, trucks, tools the whole lot.
No, if you did that you would lose your job, would anyone care to guess how much money is involved, especially for the surrounding community and businesses.
BTW, this was the last year for carbs in Pro Stock.

Doubt it. The surrounding community seems non-existent. And how much money do you think this brings to the surrounding buisness? You think there are hotels and restaurants that stay open for the dozen roving idiots that can't find one of a bazillion drag strips in this country? You the think the Real Estate agents would give enough money to offset any luke warm will confiscating these car would give as it is one less knock against something they have to sell against?
I bet the sheriff that does it gets re-elected in a walk with the largest margin he had ever seen. These types of guys, historically, are NOT well liked or appreciated in the community.
Our interests and hobbies, to the populist at large is not appreciated.

I actually toured Holley when I was in High School and got to meet the two ladies that built the Dominator Carbs.
I also got to see Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler's fuel injectors. They all come down the same line with just a grommet change.
Is that an optical illusion or is the hood a mile long??
It's a pro-mod with tags.
I would doubt it even has tags. I am pretty sure they don't care. Seems a bit quick for a new car though, so I am suspicious. Isn't that a "Firebird"? His was a GTO, shouldn't he make a fake GTO?
The show / cars are a classic example of what happens with most race series. Very interesting at the start when everyone is trying to "figure it out". As the series goes on, the tricks are figured out and all it takes is cubic money to do good.
The cars they are getting on the show now are not remotely "street". I fully expect at some point for someone to show up with a full rail dragster. I am not sure how anyone would object since the ones they have on there now are not far from that.
BTW - whomever insures that show has to be FREAKING out! I just watched the last two episodes of the most recent season, and they had THREE cars burst into flames at the start. One of which's windshield was spider cracking from the heat before the guy got out. Clearly a full on serious crash in the next season, the insurance bill must be extreme.
Firebird Looks a bit like the car bailey drove on drag week. Insanity for a "street car", though as HRM said if they drive it on the street it IS a street car.
it's not even trying to be a street car. It's got stickers for headlights.
Weren't they complaining in recent episodes about people bringing promods out there?

There's talk about cutting holes and duct taping Maglite's to the headlight area.
Kye Kelly's car that woops the former "The Crow".

Anybody could be sued, but they must be paying these guys well and I am sure they are paying the medical expense and loss of income. How do I go about getting onto a reality tv show like this? I can picture it now
On this season of street karts proved that Erie,PA boasts some of the fastest karts racers in America. Vash runs "The List," a tally of the 10 best kart racers in Erie, PA. If you want to move up a spot, you have to challenge someone else who is ranked - and win. This season, as the EPK guys battle it out for The List's top slots, drivers from all over the country - from Texas to Kansas City to California - also step up to challenge them for big money and bragging rights.
The competition is fierce, fast and merciless (and, for the first time, one of the racers fighting for a Top 10 spot is female!!!!!!). With out-of-state challengers, new EPK list racers and more racing than ever before, the STREET karts are back in a big way. The stakes are high and the risks even higher -- but it is all worth it when you are #1. Or since it's snows a lot it could be on the ice of lake erie!!!!! No traction and a illegal race made legal by discovery. How do I pitch it?

I actually noticed one of the Camaros on a recent show did pretty much that. Two small holes cut in the closed headlight covers with tiny LED lights put in the holes.
Mag Lites? The pink Nova from an early Drag week did just that. (Larry Larson?) Nobody disputes that that Nova wasn't a street car. Ragged edge, but still came from GM.
Chris Hamilton's new car under construction

You are only thinking about the small amount of purchases made, what about the bigger picture including, advertising, tourism, marketing, television rights, television advertising, state authorities are obviously for this as it has been growing for years and they don't even pretend to be running and hiding from the cops any more.
That said, the series is about to jump the shark, having seen the Crowmod, Goliath and Kye Kelly's Camaro in person at PRI, all pretense of it being a street car show is now ridiculous.
Just in time for Kye Kelly's home town spin off series to start in New Orleans.
I met and spoke to Daddy Dave and Azyn who were both very easy to talk to considering all the crap they are getting for a series that TV brought to them, rest assured they did not ask for it.
Holy hell, Goliath is back?!?
