So this evening I was out to dinner with my family and my mother remembered an "amusing" anecdote about when she was expecting with me that is a bit.... unusual.

Apparently in early 1971 when she was a poor student and expecting your truly.  A wealthy couple took an interest in her and decided to make an offer for me.   $50,000 dollars in 1971 for her to give up her baby boy to them.  Wild!

So how different would my life have been?  What would be my path if adopted by some rich Vermont couple?

I'm not unhappy by any means, but it would really have changed my upbringing.

My farmer dad wanted to move to Bolivia because the government was giving away homestead sites in the jungle and he wanted his own farm. Sure glad he was talked out of it!

Wow, that's a hell of a revelation.  I'm sure its a bit mind blowing!

The internet tells me...50,000 dollars in 1971 are equivalent to 327,476.46 dollars in 2021.

That's crazy. I suspect your mom has long debated ever telling you about that - it'd be interesting to learn what made her decide now was the time.

Yeah, my siblings pointed that out as well.  They would have been raised by someone with a nice nest egg from the beginning.  So many things would be different.

The two friends of mine with the most wealthy parents both ended up as complete messes. One is now dead and the other we use to keep in touch but about three years ago they dropped off the planet. There house was sold and they are gone. No records in any data bases.  I am hoping they got some help but I am fearing the worst and the family has kept it out of the public eye.
