My three year old son was BURSTING at the seams last night to tell me what he picked out to give me for my birthday. I kept reminding him that Daddy had to wait til today to open his presents. This morning I finally figured out why he was so excited at what he got me:
Yup, he got Daddy a monster truck. I'm still grinning from ear to ear. My wife says he lined up all the R/C cars at the store and eliminated them one by one until he got down to this and a Jeep. He then stated "Dad doesn't like Jeeps, he likes F-150s" and picked this one. I admit, he listens.
This is R/C vehicle #3 for the family fleet, and I intend on sharing this on as well. I already scoped it out and there is room for my hobby grade 7.2V battery packs if i do a little trimming under the body...
Right on! Sure as hell beats a tie.
Well at least you're easy to shop for. When I was younger my dad was into computers but now I think he's just into paperwork. I got him a big magnifying glass as a gag gift once but he actually uses it a lot.

This is going to sound sappy, but there's a feedback loop of coolness going on here. In other words, your son wouldn't have bought such an awesome present if he didn't have a relatively interesting dad to begin with.
I wish I could have shared my love of RC cars with my dad when I was a kid. He was just pissed about the cost of batteries.
So... he got himself an RC truck for your birthday A good politician always leaves the opponent smiling when they get what they want.

Yup, but the up side is we already play with my R/C cars. I've been teaching him how to drive my old Radio Shack 4x4. Now we have two trucks to play with together!
I already warned my wife that the boys and I will have a fleet of matching R/C cars at some point. I have a R/C helicopter and a R/C car at my desk already. I refuse to grow up!

This is the logic I use when buying stuff for my boys.

That's my plan if I ever have kids. I've already got two remote control cars and a huge slot car track, and no kids.
My son just turned one. You should see the trucks he is getting at his party tomorrow!
Those gifts get better as they age. The college kid bought me nothing since he wasn't home when I had my birthday.
But he gave me a good score on his GRE Chemistry test this week which should get him into a decent chemistry doctorate program. That is the real gift I would rather have.

Mine is one right now. I have........ 3 RC trucks, an RC car, no slot cars, but 100's of hotwheels. I plan to share as he gets of age. Probably get him his own hobby quality RC.
My oldest son has that same truck..hobby grade batteries can fit...hmmmmm

I use 7.2V 6-cell 1300 mAh battery packs in an old Radio Shack truck made to run on 6 volts. The hobby grade packs give a crazy run time and the voltage bump makes these toy grade R/C cars worth messing with.
Clearly your son is well on the way to being one of us...although it seems he may be already.

Oh, he is definitely on his way. I took him for a ride in my Subaru BRZ press car last night. As soon as I pulled in the driveway he was begging for a ride in the "race car". We took it for a spin in an abandoned office park nearby. When we got back he promptly told my wife "Daddy's race car goes sideways!!". :)
My co-pilot in the back seat of the BRZ:
And then your wife beat you

"One of Us"
Considering this crowd, seemed appropriate.

i have a Silverado version of that truck that i bought at Wal Mart couple of days ago after Xmas about 5 years ago for $15... other than one steering link that needed some fab work to repair after jumping off the deck in sub zero temps, the thing is practically indestructible.. then a few years ago i got a Corvette that uses the same battery pack for $20.. i got bored one day and wired the 2 9.6 volt batteries in series and put them under the truck... running at 19.2 volts, that truck is like it's on ice no matter what surface it's on and it simply will not die... it's proven more durable than a "real" RC truck my brother paid over $600 for..
