My dad had a couple self-serve car washes in the '70s and '80s that we would maintain a couple times a week. They were in heavily lower-income parts of town. I have some stories.
My favorite was during the height of the vanning craze. Guy comes in with a custom van he just bought, airbrushed mural, whole works. He starts ripping armfuls of shag carpet out of the inside. Tips my dad $20 to use the dumpster. Then he takes out the biggest rubber mallet I've ever seen and starts whaling away inside the back.
The whole outside starts falling off, murals and all, in sheets. Turns out that steel side vans were commanding such a premium cost that the PO customizer had taken a window van and just mudded the whole side smooth until you couldn't see the windows any more. Painted over the outside and shagged over the inside.
That is still just for contour. Where is the chicken wire or newspaper holding the bondo in the rust hole?
