Nicely done! In the top half of shooters with a revolver, that's impressive.

Hey, did S&W ever make an N-Frame chambered in 45 Win Mag?

I want to try a steel pig match.  Are there specific sizes for the target?  Is there a drawing / PDF anywhere with the specs?  I want to make one at half scale to use at my club's 100-yard range.

I don't know if anyone has made any revolver in 45 Win Mag, at least I can't remember one off hand

If it were a Smith, it would have to have been an X frame if factory, but I'm not aware of it.

There have been a couple discussions of modifying a gun (.45 Colt - the .45ACP cylinders are too short) to chamber it, but I haven't seen any discussions of results.

Thanks Rodan!!!

It is in the 40's today so I think I am going to sneak out and get a little range time.  I still have not shot the new to-me Mozen I got last fall.  The other thing I need to get out is my MARZ-H with the new 308 barrel I put on it.   Supposedly, it holds zero to .5 moa with a barrel change, but I am going from 6.5Cm to 308, so I think that may not be the case.

Here ya go Dean...  IIRC these are ~ 3/8 size NRA rifle silhouettes, but don't quote me on that.

I found this site selling unwelded kits, not sure if they would sell just the pigs... https://magnumtarget.com/products/magnum-target-3-8sc-nra-metallic-silhouette-targets-4pc-small-bore-pistol-plates-not-welded-38-4u?_pos=28&_sid=8d6a95cab&_ss=r

I just cut mine out of 1/4 mild steel and welded it up myself.

Here's a jpeg outline you can scale/print for a pattern...

I think I've decided to sell my Aero M5 (don't really see a place for it now with my 6ARC build.) From the sale funds will be actually looking to build a custom 16" 300blk "bolt" AR which can run both supers and subs. Was originally thinking of the Uintah Precision upper... but just now came across the Solo 300 upper.

The Uintah Precision bolt gun upper is very nice traditional bolt style action (using a tri-lug lockup), but the twist rate is too slow for subs with their standard barrel offering - would have to custom spec/order the barrel with them - additional cost and lead time. The Solo 300 upper is just a straight pull design which uses standard AR configuration - so any AR barrel could work (if cap off the gas port or custom order barrel with no gas port) and they have their own barrels with proper twist rate and no gas port.

Can't get the Solo 300 upper out my head - really want to go that route not only because of the simplicity and lightness of a rifle build with it, but cost as well - WAY LESS than half the price of a Uintah upper. Think will get a SOLO 300 upper/16" barrel combo first and order a custom no-gas ported X-Caliber barrel to eventually swap in.

Ok, that's cool. I've been contemplating a 300blk bolt gun for a new hunting rifle, but hadn't decided which one I wanted. This option is pretty neat, lightweight, whatever accessories you want, folding stock, etc. Hmmm....

My experience with .300BLK trying to shoot subs and supers out of one gun didn't go well.   Gun was a Howa 1500 Mini action bolt... shot supers to ~1 MOA, subs were 3-4 MOA.  Had a 1:7 twist, but it sure didn't like heavy bullet subs.  Also there's a 12" difference in POI between subs/supers with .300BLK at 100yds, so it's nearly impossible to have any kind of zero to switch between the two.  I decided to punt, and just shoot subs out of a 10" AR in .300BLK.

One thing I will say:  .300BLK subs out of a bolt with a suppressor are QUIET.  Really fun to shoot.  I probably would have kept the Howa if it had shot better with the subs.  Something like the above 'bolt action' AR would be great if it shoots... Personallly, I would stick with a 9-10" barrel... that's what the BLK was designed for.

Nice thing with that Solo300 is they were saying without the stress of the semi-auto action, I guess the barrel nut doesn't need torqued as tight, so you can swap barrels pretty quickly.

Has anyone messed around with 6mm ARC?  I have a couple stripped un used lowers and was thinking of doing a build. Gissele makes complete uppers and matching mags. This with an 18" barrel and I am thinking it could make for a really nice long range shooter.

9 hole reviews on YouTube did a review of one and I was very impressed.

I would just need the upper. I would use a LMT lower that I have.

Hmm.....lots of complaints about grip fitment on the Ruger Taffin model. Kinda don't want to spend $1200ish on something with that bad of fitment.

Kinda sad to see Ruger doing poorly recently too

I'm just starting into 6ARC... For my AR precision rifle build have just recently rebarreled from a 20" Faxon Match to a much heavier, stiffer Shaw 18" barrel. Didn't like how the Faxon barrel shot supressed, was not acceptable with the heavier 105-108gr bullet weights I wanted to use but was fine with the light 80gr bullets. Also have built up a Howa mini-action in a JTAC industries Elf Owl chassis which has yet to put a single round down the barrel.

I actually decided to go with a different side charging upper assembly for the 300BLK 'bolt' AR project. While the SOLO 300 is pretty cool, I really wanted something still using a full length BCG and with the side charging handle further forward. Also would like saving a bit more money - so am trying out a Davidson Defense Sidecar upper/ambi side charging bolt setup for almost half the price. Charging handle is noticeably further forward and can use buffer spring to assist putting bolt into battery and keeping some tension on it. Also was able to order a Shaw 16" HBAR profile barrel on heavy discount for less than price of the SOLO barrel and a skeletonized Faxon gas block which will be mounting backwards to block off the barrel gas port.

What's really interesting is the brand new for 2025 but in development for nearly a decade Hornady 338ARC cartridge.... might be a better choice if you want a hard hitting suppressed hunting round good for 2-300yards. 307grain projectile...

Ok... That sounds like a good route too. I'll be honest I have not done a lot of research into AR building to know all these possibilities out there like that sidecar upper. More research to do... Fortunately I have some time. Two other thread related purchases are in line before the 300 build.

Post a picture when you can, I'd love to see it.

I did see mention of that 338 ARC round recently, haven't had a chance to look into it more yet. 2-300yd  range would be a lot nicer than 300blk, where I figure 100yds is about the limit on subsonics reliably. At a glance it looks like the ammo cost still isn't too bad. Though I did just get a small batch of 300blk target subs I'd hate to go to waste... Maybe both is good. šŸ¤£

Here's some general musings I've been having about storage, sorry if it's a bit rambly, but I'm curious if anyone else has had similar thoughts.

I'd like to do a gun room one day, but that day is not visible yet. So in the meantime it'd be nice to have a secure work space for child safety, and also to keep things clean.

I've seen some claims recently that the gun safes that most box stores have aren't actually super fireproof, and to a thief aren't that secure either, and these adds were advocating essentially a toolbox having the same security and better usability, which I think makes sense to some extent. So the primo route I think would be a sweet 72" box with a hutch. I think that would give enough room to do most things, and not even have to put anything away, just close the hutch and lock it and its all set. Sadly, even the HF Icon chest + hutch would be ~$4k before coupons, and the HF US General would be $2500 before coupon. Not terrible in some regards, but not cheap either. Those hutches would look sick with gun hangers on the back wall too.

Next time I'm at the hammer store I'll have to stop by the toolboxes and see how much space the hutches actually provide to work in. In theory it seems like a good idea though.

I also want to check out their Yukon cabinets, much more affordable, but I'm sure much flimsier, but are they sturdy enough for basic security and workbench needs? Maybe. No hutch, but ARs, etc could go down into the top drawer when not actively being worked on, probably not a big enough drawer for most hunting rifles. Need to grab a measuring tape and poke around more.

$350 before coupon:

$300 before coupon:

Edit to add: I am not reloading, and don't really plan to. This would just be for a general cleaning/assembly area.

Only a commercial level safe (think $10k+... used) is truly secure... battery powered grinders with cutoff wheels can get into most consumer safes, but it takes time... more than most burglars want to spend.  If a pro thief wants your stuff, they're probably going to get it.

I have the US General series 3 big boxes, but not the hutch.  They're super nice and great quality, but nowhere near as stout as my gun safes.  Also, the footprint will be larger, for less usable storage space.  A $50 6' folding table will give you more worktop space...

I have one of these.  I use it mostly for amo storage and weird mag storage.  In the bottom I keep bulk amo in either box's or in amo cans.  It will fit 6 amo cans with no issue per side.  They stack 2 high with enough space to allow easy access (aka not a tight fit)  The top is where I store all my specialty amo.  The weird stuff I have acquired or low volume stuff for some of my more obscure things.  I also keep some tools that I use on a regular basis in the drawer and some mags for things that are more of my collector stuff.

I am considering getting another one.  I may get the one that is all drawers.  Getting one with more drawers would allow me to get some of the stuff out of my wall mounted cabinet. I would like to have my firearms specific tolls better organized and I think the one that is all drawers would be great for that.

General opinion is that it is very well built.  The locks are not swiss watch type things but more than satisfactory for what they do.  It is not a safe but it will keep things secure and safe from those that should not be handling these kinds of things whit out supervision (Adults and Kids).

Thanks for the review, that's really helpful, especially ammo can capacity. I know they're not going to be Fort Knox, but as you said it'll keep things secure from kids, etc. Hopefully my store has a display model I can check out next visit.
