Like the title says, hows the drive from Boston to sFl in March? Should I expect tons of snow up until I get to Va?

I am looking at buying a car there and would like to drive it down. Unfortunately the car has no snow tires and it is not very snow weather friendly ...

I have experience driving in the snow, but never with a RWD car like this.

Tires are 255/45-17 and 215/50-17. I could not find any snow tires in that size, but also did not put too much effort as they would be a one time use.

Stagger!

Its a complete crapshoot that time of year. Could be 2 feet of snow from mid-VA all the way up to Boston. Could be sunny and 50 in Boston.

Yep. Best plan would be to budget an extra day or two in case you need to wait out a storm or if travel is slow because of one. I'd rather do that than spend the money on snow tires that you'll only need once.

The roads are probably clear 9 days out of 10 (or more) that time of year. No way to know which day you'll hit.

As a southerner, why are you buying a northern car?

Sounds like a BMW, based on the wheel set up!

I'll say it's a crap shoot, but I wouldn't worry about the portion of New England you will be in, or NY for that matter. These states do a phenominal job clearing snow. Now the salt is another problem, but one you can probably deal with after you return home, and give it a really thorough bath. I've owned a 2wd Suburban for 5+ years here in snowy New England, and drive a Chevy cargo van for work. I maintain, and repair generators for a living for a giant Telecom company. We are always out in the worst of the crap weather in these 2wd vans on all season tires. We get around just fine. Worst case scenario is you get a hotel room for a day or less and wait for the roads to clear up. Truthfully I wouldn't worry about it one bit up here. We know how to deal with the white stuff. Now maybe the Mid-Atlantic, and southern states may not, but they don't usually get as much snow as us. Enjoy the trip.

Beginning or end of march? The difference is pretty huge typically.

The drive was a big part of buying this car, I would have gone with either my dad or one of my kids.

The owner could only store it for 4 weeks, that's why early March would have been the time to do it.

Hoo boy

I would have driven that to an alternate storage location for you. You know, just to help out.

Should be no problem. After all, we're supposed to be enablers. So expect the best, but plan for the worst. Really, by that time of the season most of the worst weather is over. The odds are with you. Hope that helps.

I was this close to bidding on that, ended up in a last minute meeting as the auction was ending. Well done!

If you need a place to stop on the way down, I'm near Reading, PA and would love to have a closer look at a 348, I'm down to that, an NSX, or 911 turbo as a next toy. Having grown up in Boston and done that drive plenty of times, I suggest heading out this way to go south instead of the I95 slog. Go through PA to I81 south, then through charlotte and south from there, it is a much more pleasant drive.

In reply to Sonic:

Unfortunately I was not the winning bidder. I had set myself a limit of $50k all in and it was fast approaching that including a belt service/BAT fee/flight. I probably would have bid a couple of thousand more if I did not have to get on a phone call, but seeing how Mbhauis was bidding, it looked to me that it was not worth it.

Snow will not be the problem. Salt will be the problem. Even on dry roads, in the winter months, the salt residue is tremendous.

If you do drive it through the salt, please promise that when you get to FL you will take the car out for a drive every time it rains for at least the first 6 times it rains. You can not wash off with a hose all the places the salt will get on the undercarriage. Driving through fresh water will then rinse the same undercarriage areas.

If you take it home in the salt and never drive it in the rain you will regret it.

You'll need to log in to post.
