7.62x51 NATO and .308 Win are not the same round, close enough to be fully interchangeable, but not the same. For example, a new gun chambered in 7.62 NATO will more often than not swallow a .308 Win FIELD (MAX allowable headspace under any circumstances) headspace gauge. Overall length is .050" longer for .308, and max pressure is a bit higher too.
Ya know... I grew up in a hard-core hunting family, and I remember being 5 years old shooting my first rifle with my dad.
But I have to admit... the finer points of firearms have escaped me. I think its partly due to the fact that I'm not immersed in the culture. I can tell you why moly rings work better on a Hemi and cast rings work better on a Wedge, but I get lost on some of the gun stuff.
I remember being fascinated that my Mom's .357 could fire .38 shells. Then I learned about the Judge which could shoot .45 or .410 shotgun shells?
Mind=blown.
In reply to curtis73:
That's just coincidence on the .410/45 thing, .357 mag was developed as a super hot .38(.38 SPL uses a .357 bullet) loading, the case was just made longer on the final product to prevent mixups. Mind blown is the rim/base dimensions of .303 Brit and .410 shotgun are very close, close enough you can take a SMLE with a bad bore and punch it out to .410, recut the chamber straight, and have a super slick bolt action .410 shotgun. Or how soldiers returning from WW2 brought back a lot of mausers, but no ammo, solution? .30-06 case is a tad bigger in every way than 8mm mauser, bigger case(more powder), bigger bullet, 8mm-06 is born, win-win.

There's one for sale on the local gun site: indianagunowners.com under the classifieds "Long Guns". He also has a .303 for sale as well.
That's a nice rifle, Curtis. Here is mine. It's a 1937 Winchester 70 .30-06 with a Lyman peep sight.

Hot damn, need that. Buy it for me, break it down and ship it to me in FL. I've been wanting to replace my .303 with a .308 version.
Umm... no. That, by definition, is a straw purchase and to top it off it's across state lines. Thanks, but no thanks. I can get you in contact with the seller so you can arrange your own deal if you want.
Well then buy it for me as a gift, that's not illegal My first comment was full of cheek if you didn't catch it.
Today's fun. You can see the progression of sighting in the scope. Once I hit the bull, I hit the three squares in the corners. Figured I wouldn't get it any better.
