IMHO, K1 is a good way to figure out if the kids are interested in doing it competitively/regularly, or just as an occasional fun activity. If the former, then it's worth thinking about longer-term investment in your own karts & other equipment.

Which one are you going to? My son's doing the 5th/3rd ballpark school in October.

Right now my 15 year old would probably say pre-ordering "No Man's Sky" was his greatest accomplishment.

I'd say teaching himself to fly RC planes without help at 10 was pretty impressive. He's plays a pretty mean classical guitar for someone who's only been playing for a year and does well in school.

That's the one I'm looking at, too. Need to get off my butt and get them signed up.

My daughter is very involved in the school's theater program, and this year the musical production was Les Mis. That is a pretty big undertaking for a high school, but they put a lot of work and effort into it and it was frankly, really really good. There is an awards program for area high schools, and they have not been nominated or won anything significant in her time at the school. This year however, they were nominated in 10 categories, including best performance and best actor. They won 4 in the end, including best musical in their size category, and best actor overall. That's pretty huge considering they compete against a performing arts high school. (think Fame if you are my age, or Victorious if you are not)

The best part was getting to go downtown to the Benedum Theater to watch my little girl perform on stage, along with the rest of the cast, many of whom are like kids to me.

Five year old, Matthew, has completely turned around. He was not speaking at all well past two years old. Time spent with therapists and other folks and lots of Mom time during homeschool has turned him from a cranky, angry, screaming kid to a happy, loving, gentle kid. He doesn't hesitate to speak, even when he doesn't know the words. He tries different words when his first choice doesn't work out. It's really amazing. He's also an excellent hugger. The whole last year has been like this.

My oldest turns 12 today. He didn't ask for a party (we do cake and stuff, at this age we give him what he asks for whithin reason)

He now has people asking to come over for his birthday dinner and cake (Spaghetti Alfredo with meat balls.)

His teacher is throwing him a party at school.

He has a big heart. He makes everyone smile.

Had my niece living with us with her 2 kids, 5 years old and 3 years old,and it was trying.

While I was constantly reminding the niece about finishing things, the kids were listening. All the little annoying things such as put the cap on the toothpaste, drain the bathtub, put milk back in the fridge...ya'll know the drill.

The other day the 3 year old goes to poop. When she is done we see that she did her business, replaced the empty toilet roll on the holder (empty roll in the tras!!), straightened the mat, wiped the sink after washing her hands, puts a stray towel in the hamper and brings 2 cups to the kitchen sink!! Looks at me and says "That was easy".

6 year old boy helped with new tires and tubes for his bike. Once he realized we could not patch the tube, he spent his time polishing the chrome!!

My 13yo got student of the month in Cross-Country for being the most improved. He knocked 10 minutes off his 2 mile run from the beginning of the year to the last meet.

He may not be the fastest, but he gets a solid consistent pace that's put him ahead of many kids that where much faster off the line.

Okay, here is an update.

He organized his own birthday party! He actually went out and invited people over and then told me and Ms. Service 20 hours before...

"I just invited people over for some dinner and cake. That is okay on my birthday, right?"

I've managed to keep my son alive for 3 whole weeks so far. He's a pretty happy, healthy baby who's growing well.

At this point, that feels like a major accomplishment for all 3 of us.

This should be in the win thread. As it isn't so much an accomplishment for the kid, but for you and the mom.

Congrats! How is no sleep going?

You're probably right. Sleeping isn't too bad actually - at the very least he's consistent. We usually get a 4 hour stretch at night, other than that it's every 3 like clockwork.

The wife and I both feel like we're doing pretty good with the lack of sleep, but then we hang out with other people and realize how tired we really are haha. Overall it's been pretty great so far.

My daughter is becoming a smartass, and she can't even talk yet. We were playing in the ball pit today:

"Harleigh, give daddy a red ball" hands me a red ball

"give me a purple ball" hands me a purple ball.

"give daddy a green ball" she handed me a yellow and a blue.

No, we haven't gone over combining colors yet. Maybe it was a happy coincidence, but I suspect sarcasm.

7 year old boy has been having a great time in his first year of pee wee football. We are headed for the County Super Bowl. He plays center and nose tackle and is a bit of a sweet-heart oaf. He has 20lbs and 5 inches on his competition and still gives a handto help his his opponent up after steam rolling them.

On the way home from practice he asked me why some of the kids didn't want his help getting up afterward. His coaches asked me if I had worked on getting him to "act mean". I chuckled and reminded them that the point of youth sports was personal and social development not "winning". I was met with confused stares...

Oldest son (19) owns 4 cars free and clear... 3 run and are legal, 1 is a future project. He's buying a house next month. Very proud of all he's accomplished so far and his having a good head and willingness to listen to the people who want to help him succeed.

Next one earned the role of The Wizard in The Wizard of Oz high school play. And is a phenomenal piano player.

I always love seeing the kids with good sportsmanship, especially as they get older. I used to hear the same thing from coaches 'they're too nice for football', etc.

FWIW, my son and his friends all started playing football at about your son's age. They're now Jr/Srs, maybe half still play football, but at least 8 of the kids from that team are still very close friends, just much, much bigger. Picture 2300lb of kids in your living room Bring food; lots of it.

They're all still good kids according to the school resource officer, who has labelled his herd as a 'go-to' group. Some of the stuff about social development, etc, is actually true.
