The Taurus X has a touch over 80k on it, and my wife is reporting the familiar grinding noise from the rear. This is old hat at this point, I've already had to put rear pads on the thing 3 times. I replaced the fronts with the rears last time, but they probably didn't need it. This thing just chews through rear brake pads like nobody's business, probably because the rear pads are about as big as a "fun size" candy bar and the fronts are bigger than the ones on my GTO.

Anyhow, I've been using Autozone Gold pads because they are easily available and don't dust much. I could get another set for free, obviously, but I'm getting tired of doing this every 18 months. I'm willing to spend some money to get something that might last a bit longer. I've run Hawk and Porterfield on my track and sporty cars with good results, should I look to them for daily-driver pads?

I run performance friction pads on my dailies. American made, good initial bite, reasonably low dust, pretty long lived. They have a few different types of pads, I prefer either the carbon metallic or z compound.

buy name brand pads.

I've had those autozone pads separate on me at speed.

Always been a fan of Centric 104 or 105 series pads. I also did commercial brake jobs for 5 years. Wagner Thermoquiets are my number 3 choice. I really like the Satisfied GranSports but they can be really hard to find.

Have been a fan of hawks for a while, they also have a more sedate ceramic brand if you feel a bit silly buying HPS pads

Well, I was going to suggest Autozone Golds. That's what I run on my work van and I get 60K-80K out of them. I guess that's out, so I got nothing. Good luck.

They are doing just fine on the front. It's only the rears where I have trouble. This is the first vehicle I've had that goes through rears (much) faster than fronts.

I'll see what Rockauto and Tirerack have for it. Thanks.

I've had excellent luck with Akebono Europros. Good feel, good life, quiet, not real dusty.

Have you tried releasing the parking brake?

In relation to the above. Cables sticking, self adjuster not working properly.

A bit of internet searching shows this is a problem for a LOT of Taurus X owners. Not a lot of solutions though, mostly take it back to the dealer and raise hell about a possible recall. Maybe good results with Raybestos pads.

Good luck with it though.
