I was all excited. I got a coupon in the mail from Pep Boys that said $20 off a purchase of $100. Awesome. I change my Mustang's oil once a year in spring since I use synthetic oil and it has a factory-recommended maintenance interval of 1 year or 10K miles. (It gets driven just under 10K a year.) So, I was ready to go pick up 8 quarts of Royal Purple 5W30 and an oil filter. Then I notice the back of the coupon said:
DOES NOT APPLY TO PURCHASES OF TIRES, WHEELS, OIL, ANTIFREEZE, REFRIGERANT, ELECTRONICS, GIFT CARDS, OR SPECIAL ORDER MERCHANDISE.
Seriously? WTF else do you even buy at Pep Boys?!

When I think of Pep Boys, mostly I think of cheap ricer crap add-ons and fuzzy dice, although I have been known to buy an actual auto part there from time to time.
Edit: Actually the last part I bought there may have been a rebuilt A/C compressor for my truck deep in the last century. It didn't last a year.

Does not apply to purchases of car stuff?
Wow. I guess they only want to give you 20% off car PARTS? I'd have left it all on the counter and stood right there and called the local Autozone to have them hold the parts for me.
Autozone often does the same thing, though. And i know Advance will exclude lubricants from their promos.

Hrm, the last coupons I got from Advance were straight amounts off any purchase. I got $30 off any purchase >$100.
Oil and filters are supposed to be lost leaders. So, they are already selling at either cost or just above cost but really no margin in the price.
If oil filters are a loss leader then the AutoZone near me has a really crappy purchasing agent. I use Bosch oil filters, a 3122 for da Trooper (and the Jensenator FWIW) is $6.99. Rock Auto has the exact same thing for $3.74. The Bosch P/N 3324 filter for the kid's Saturn is $12.99 at AZ, $4.96 at RA. So I buy filters from RA four (sometimes six) at a time, even with shipping it's way cheaper than AZ.

I was buying the redline's cartridge filters in 10 incriments at a GM dealer for less than VATOZONE, Oriley, and advance......
In reply to Curmudgeon:
But go in asking for a GM 3.8 FWD or Ford mod motor... cheap. They are trying to get back their money on other versions. What do you think they are making on having a PissInABottle/Pureoillater special if you walk up with your Trooper filter?
How many locations are there for RA? How much do they pay in local/state/federal taxes per location? Electricity? Employees and their costs?

Yes... that's right, its a fake turbo sound maker!!
I'll just save the coupon for when underglow neons go on sale.
Also, in other news, Amazon.com sells Royal Purple in cases of 12. For just under $100. That's just under $8 a quart!
In reply to Ranger50:
Oh, I'm with you there. I understand the bricks and mortar store overhead thing quite well. But I gotta watch my budget, too. If I can save 1/2 off even with shipping, that's more $ for groceries etc.
BTW, a PH3593A Fram at my local AZ is $4.19. At RA, it's $1.82. IIRC it's something like $3.75 at Wally World.

Somewhere out there is a fake BOV. It's a speaker that plays the BOV sound. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/whatthe-18.png)

Why do i want to put both of these things on my Cherokee?
Or for added hilarity, Swank Force One.
The only thing I've bought at Pep Boys in the last 5 years was a Miata starter -- AutoZone and Kragen didn't have 'em in stock.

I went to Pep-boys to get some oil for my parents Van. The ONLY reason I went there was they gave me a 25$ gift card they received at some point. It still cost me over 50$ for the oil and filter, and 2 decent wipers. I vowed to never go in there again. I priced the same exact stuff at wal-mart and was irate to find the total was right at 48$...
