As an avid outdoorsman, this is relevant to my interests. Mostly because I am picturing massive clearance sales.
I had seen that they were thinking about offering to buy, but new reports suggest there is a firm Jan 1, 2016 takeover date.
Anyone have news on this? I found this one report from Billings, MT, but its hard to confirm a report from a few retail employees.

I liked the atmosphere of Cabela's more than Bass Pro.
I always enjoyed the product selection at Cabela's. It was a little more leaning toward the hiking, camping, hunting, stuff and BPS leaned a bit toward Marine and fishing.
Both had their awesomeness, but I just leaned a little toward Cabela's.
Bummer, I too liked Cabelas more. It would be nice if BPS keeps the same store style and just rename it if needed.
Idk, they are still building one here in richmond on the opposite side of town from the BPS
If it does happen, it'll be a hostile takeover.
they just built a bass pro here in Atlantic City, I have yet to take a peek inside

I read about it earlier this week. I've never been in a Bass Pro, but I've been in the Cabelas in Hamburg, PA a number of times as well as bought things online.
Cabela's is an upscale bass pro. Bass pro always seemed a bit umm... "WT"
I'm not the outdoorsy type, but I visit the Cabela's in Dundee, Mi. at least once a year for fun and I'll look through the clearance section for an occasional item I just gotta have. BPS has more golf stuff, but Cabela's has a better outerwear selection.
Just opened a Cabela's here.
Gives more locations and broader selection. I'm guessing. Expanding market reach.
I would be shocked if this is true. The Cabelas stores are vacation spots for people. The Dundee store being on of them. The one here in Grand Rapids...eh..
I haven't heard anything about a buyout, but I wish they would open either here. All we have are a Gander Mountain and a Field and Stream. They both suck and don't carry anything in stock.
I think the Cabelas in Dundee, Michigan is considered the number one tourist attraction in the state.
Funny i went too the grand opening of the dundee store with a friends family in highschool. Havnt been to cabelas since! My hunting gear comes from online stores and my firearms from a local store.
Whenever I get the itch for camo fleece items, BPS scratches it.
I know 2 couples that honeymooned at the Wheeling WV Cabelas
We have a Cabellas. I like it. It is an occasional lunch hour destination. I blew a bill and a half there today. I bought some 50AE ammo and other hard to otherwise source things like powder, primers and cases at a reasonable price. The 44 mag cases were the same price as Amazon. Can't beat that.

It looks like it's just a rumor for now. Basspro actually did make noises about buying them a few weeks ago but nothing besides the rumor is out yet. It actually looks like it's employees reacting to the drop in the stock price.
As a side note: Am I the only one that finds it pathetic that the stock of the company dropped 14.1% because the company "only" posted revenues up 4.6% from last year and the earnings per share were "only" $.72 missing the analysts estimates by $.02? Mind you they came up $45 million short (of again the analysts estimates) with revenues of $926.5 million and a net income of $50 million, and still issued dividends unlike an online only Walmart type company that starts with an A. I guess the hedgefund holders won't be able to buy the new G650s for Christmas this year and they're pissed about it.

If missing by less than 5% was such a huge deal the company employing the analysts should fire them because they obviously aren't good at their jobs. /scarcasm
*Side note 2: No I don't care about hedgefunds making money this just seems like an overreaction to a company that is still profitable and still issuing dividends.
Good. After the way Cabela's destroyed Gander Mountain, a little payback would be nice to see.
Neither Bass Pro nor Cabela's is really about anything but bling.
Gander Mountain destroyed themselves. After the old man died, the kids went nuts. Mansions on Lake Geneva, couple of private jets, etc..They could have had the sporting world by the ass. I live less then 10 miles from corporate headquarters and the home store. I watched it happen.

Personally I'd rather see the inside of an REI much more than a Cabela's or Bass Pro, but I don't hunt, so I'm really not the target audience. We've got a Gander Mountain here and I don't know how they stay in business. Weird store.
Last time I checked, McHenry, IL was about 350 miles from St Paul, MN, not 10.
Robert Sturges (who has apparently not died yet, I don't find an obituary for him anywhere) founded Gander mountain in 1960 and sold it to Ralph Freitag (mostly) in 1984, who almost immediately made it a publicly shared company. No record or indication of kids running of the company on either end.
Gander Mountain had darn good stuff for hunting and trapping and even fishing. Much of the best products were Gander Mountain labeled. When Cabela's took ownership of the mail order business in 1995, those products were almost immediately removed. The remaining products were, and still are, of a significantly lower quality. Bass Pro is of lower quality still.
Yes, one can find good products at both Cabela's and Bass Pro. But you have to wade through the pink spincast fishing rods, the wallpaper displays, teddy bears, deep friers and god knows how many holiday trinkets.
Well, at least I can still find good mail order suppliers in magazines like Fur, Fish Game. Some still don't have web pages and you actually have to call them (gasp!) to place an order. But I can get repair parts and traps and fish netting and protective gear that doesn't shred itself from them.

Vs. say, the Great Lakes?
On a serious note- while neither of us are gamers at all, we liked Cabela's, until I bought a pair of Cabela's high end gloves- both leather ones and cold temp ones. Both were terrible. Which made us think that Cabela's is the sporting world's equivalent of Best Buy or Lowes.
So we go small and local. Products tend to be better.
Ok, 10 miles from the distribution hub. I knew many people who worked there. That was the scuttle butt that was going around.
BTW, I,happened to like Gander Mountain when they were alive and kicking.
