Call her Crash

So we're gonna rename my wonderful girlfriend of many years to "Crash". We already called her that from time to time cause when she drinks beer she falls asleep, but now it's got a double meaning. Some of you may have heard me mention in the VDay post that she changed her car insurance over to liability last month to save some cash and then wrecked her car Monday after coming home from work. Rendering it undriveable. Which royally sucks because it's my off season and I don't exactly have piles of money just laying around to fix it.

Here's where it gets worse. She changed her insurance to full coverage, and I told her she could take my work truck to work since I'm not using it right now. On the way, some lady tried to cross over in front of her to get on the highway and tagged my truck. They both pulled over into a parking lot and began to exchange info. My girlfriend gave the woman her insurance and went back to my truck to deal with her insurance agent who just so happened to be calling about her previous wreck. As soon as she got back to my truck the other woman hopped into her car and took off. (taking the insurance card with her)

Problem is I'm the only one insured on the truck and I only have liability. So the bad news is that without the other woman's info we have to rely on Crash's insurance to pay to fix my truck, and we are still out on fixing her car now. I'm pretty worried Progressive is gonna try to say she drives my truck too frequently (when actually that was the first time in years), and say because we live together we should have been on the same policy, blah, blah, blah... FML

So, which toy am I gonna have to sell to pay for all this? Bright side is we still have my DD to car pool in, but it's still gonna be a pain. Anybody have a spare bumper car laying around she can drive?

So what if Progressive tries to say it? The truth is she rarely does, right?

Did she report it to the authorities? Can she describe the car? Any traffic cameras, commercial security cameras, etc. in the area?

Hit and run is illegal. Leaving the scene of an accident is illegal.

Got police report, description is vague (I love her but she only knows about the cool cars and blue sedan is all we got.), no cameras, and this truck is a work truck only. The only time it's used is for landscaping. I hadn't even drivin it in a month...

Many of us have these new phones... I tell everyone I know, no matter what, first thing you do is snap a pic of a license plate, and the accident itself.

I know I'm a cold, heartless bastard for saying this, but Crash needs to work on her situational awareness. The only person who can look after her while by herself is exactly that, herself.

Beyond that, I do wish you good luck in getting things righted. A hit and run is bogus, if someone tried to do that to me you'd bet there would be a good ol' fashioned car chase.

The company I work for won't let you be on the same policy if you aren't married.

Progressive will allow you both on the same policy if you arent married.

How bad is the truck? Any reason you actually need to file a claim and get it repaired or can you just live with it?

Regardless of how often she drives, see what the policy says about "members of your household." In the "Definitions" section, under "Insured."

She drinks a beer and passes out? She's the perfect women! Do whatever you have to to keep her.

I totally agree about snapping a shot of the license plate first, but to her credit it seemed like everything was gonna be legit at first. It seems as though the other lady thought she was gonna do the right thing, realized it was gonna be her fault, and just took off.

She does need to work on her situational awareness, and I also agree that she needs to be better about taking care of herself when by herself. I blame some of this on the fact that I have probably been too much of a "fixer" for her. When she gets in a jam I usually sort it out for her. I need to work on teaching her how to be more independent, but she should already have that figured out. She's 26 for berkleying sake.

Well, here's the good news. Although Progressive is probably not gonna cover it, my insurance probably will. I only have liability on that truck, but I do have uninsured motorist coverage. Which means that unless the other lady comes forward my insurance will most likely cover it. We shall see. I have Farmer's and they are generally pretty easy to get along with. They told me to go get estimates and that we would file a claim if it was worth it.

It's not that bad of damage, but I don't wanna just live with it. I use this truck for mowing and it's not a pretty truck because of that. However, I like to look professional and not be that guy with the nasty beat up truck. If it looks like I don't take care of my things then how are my customers gonna feel about letting me take care of their property. Also, the damage significantly took out a turn signal. Enough that no amount of orange tape is gonna fix. So, if I'm gonna get this thing inspected (which is up at the end of this month). I'm gonna have to get it fixed.

And last but not least. She WOULD BE the perfect woman. IF she could quit costing me so much freaking money! Ok seriously, even through this and anything else to come I guess I'll keep her. She seriously is stifling my chances of coming up with engagement ring money any time soon though.

Document everything. Quick pics of the tail of the other car help with the description.

While showing me around Newfoundland, a friend of mine was involved in a fender bender. An SUV backed into our car.

As my friend got out to check damage, I realized that the lady in the SUV that hit us was not getting out and was likely still in gear (brake lights on, engine running). Since I was there for Targa, I always had a camera or two handy. Thinking she might pull a runner, I casually but quickly stepped out and snapped a shot of her license plate and the tail of the car.

THEN she parked the SUV and got out. The two drivers then had a discussion and exchanged information, while I took detailed shots of both cars, the damage, the drivers, the parking lot … Maybe I went overboard and inconvenienced to many electrons, but I like to think I helped the SUV driver make the right decision.

The other drive got your info and took off? I'd be worried about her making up a story and putting a claim on your insurance.

Even if she does make a claim because we did a police report and she didn't. We would be backed up. Also, since it's already open and shut as far as the cops are concerned it's considered mutual fault (that's probably not the insurance term but you get the idea). I still can't believe she actually stole my girlfriends insurance card. At first I thought maybe she was just late for work and figured she'd let us deal with the cops and file the claim on her own time but she still hasn't come forward. People are strange.

Intersections usually have cameras that the police can access in those situations.

Now if its a mutual fault accident, you're kinda screwed.

Sometimes people need help making the correct decision. How silly would you feel if you did nothin' and she skirted? Good job either way.

No camera in this situation. There's actually still very few of those here.

Well, it does look like my insurance for the truck is gonna step up and possibly pay for an uninsured motorist claim. Which is pretty cool because I didn't even know I had that. The estimate on my truck is looking at just under $3k. Yikes!

As far as her car goes we are just gonna get the thing driveable, and she can take it back to fix the rest of the body work when she can afford it. I kinda wish we'd had it towed to our house because I could have done a control arm in the driveway, but it's not worth another $150 tow.

There is somthing about a 26yo woman. I believe they are at there peak hotness at that age. It may just be me but every time I've fallen for a woman she has been 26. Well except my wife.
