wait, nobody wants to continue caring for cars that were E36 M3ty when they were new 20 to 30 years ago? Weird.
A Sapporo raced in Lemons the last few years.
There is a Z24 in the parking lot at work.
Are they talking all insurance records across the nation? I mean, who the hell insures their Cavalier with Hagerty?
The problem with that article is that they took only the statistics from one speciality car insurer, which makes their finding absolutly pointless and not a good depiction of reality.
Heck, there are currently 9 Golf GTI's for sale locally.
I can't get to the article through that link due to windows phone but it's been at least 15 years since I have seen an old school V6 Z24 on the road. I know they are junk but for some reason one of those with a V6 and manual transmission appeals to me.
I haven't seen a Z24 of that era in a loooong time. I would love to have a clean one and swap in a Cobalt SS tubo motor and 6 speed.
I've seen these extinct car lists before and no of more that they mention driving around here locally. Have determined that those still driving these cars are still using these cars as basic transportation which makes them ineligable for classic insurance like Hagerty.
Had a Z24 Cavalier several years ago, bought it for my daughters. I admit I was impressed with the handling and performance of it. Pretty good for what it was. When they banged it up, I found another for parts. It was a former DARE police vehicle confiscated from a drug dealer. Had the ugliest hot pink interior.
I test drove one of these with my buddy in 1984. The salesperson kept telling us that the Z24 was so new that the insurance company didn't know about them and they would be marked as just a Cavalier. He went with a Mustang GT in the end, which was way cooler, but the Z24 wasn't half bad. I kinda dig the angular shape of the car.
I also recall that in Showroom Stock, one team raced the fastback version of the Z24 because it had better aerodynamics. Try to find a fastback Z24 with a stick today...serious unicorn. Although the functionality was great. So great in fact that Audi copied it with the A7. Sorta.
And while on this note, Geo Automobiles were produced from 1989 to 1997. They were made in large numbers and not that long ago. But how often do you see one now?

The big problem with Geo Storms is they rusted horribly. At least in the rust belt, they pretty much all returned to the earth within a few years after being sold.

Just like these will be next to extinct
6000 or so made over a total of 4 model years.....

Ehh, I'd consider worthy of being on an endangered list to have to actually be a good car in the first place.
I just saw a Scorpio on my way home from work a few weeks ago, though I will admit it's the first I've seen on the road in several years.
Wow, do I miss the 80's Z24? My high school friends' father worked at a Chevy dealer and would bring home Z24 'verts...we had fun in those things.
When I was 18, a good friend of mine had an '87 Cavalier Z24. He thought it was awesome until I got an '86 VW Golf, and could hang with him on the straights and leave him in the dust through the curves. He sold it and bought a '91 Jetta GLI 16v.
I saw a shockingly clean Scorpio about a week ago. Cavalier Z24s aren't common, but far from rare. Scamps and Rampages probably are legitimately endangered, but I'll bet the people that care about them know where and how to find them. Same goes for the GTIs.
I can't remember the last time that I've seen a Sapporo, even in a junk yard.
Most rallies I have attended over the last few years have had 5-6 MkII Golf's entered. They are still out there.
There are plenty of old Cavaliers around. I think it's the chevy Beretta that should be on the list.
