A webm is video format that your browser can likely play.
Any video clip that can be an animated gif can be better as a webm.
It is an HTML5 standard. It works in the preview pane, but is stripped out upon adding the post. With certain automatically added restrictions it would be pretty slick. It should, by default, autoplay, loop, be muted and have no user controls. A 3mb file size limit would keep the clips shortish.
You can see the huge difference in quality by making a clip using https://gifyoutube.com. It will generate both a webm and an animated gif that you can switch between.

As an occasional mobile user who has to avoid the GIF threads due to a lack of patience to wait for them to download, I vote; "NO!"
In reply to turboswede: You could avoid the webm thread just as easily. They may not work in your mobile browser anyway. In an unsupported browser it would (could and should) say "Your browser does not support the video tag.".
Here is a link to a webm file. It is about half a MB.

Here is a little blurb from reddit:
What is WebM? WebM is a video/image format that aims to reduce bandwidth usage and to replace the GIF format. WebMs load faster, run smoother, and can even include audio. Along with that, WebM uses HTML5, a revolutionary smart addition to the HTML family.

Except when someone posts one or more in the middle of a thread that I actually want to read.

At least we know it's not lupus. It's never lupus.

That's why I'm asking for those restrictions to be lifted or modified.

Yes.

Except when it is. My friend has it. Turns out that rocket fuel used in the Navy in the 70's and early 80's causes Lupus (SLE). Who knew? VA: "Oh well, sucks to be you."
