Anybody out there willing to run a couple of carfax reports for me?? Even 1 would be sweet!

I believe that it is illegal. Somebody on this board actually works for the company, IIRC, they don't look kindly upon it.

nope.. not at all. Any other board would have locked this topic as soon as it was posted

Illegal?? Really. I figured it was the same thing as letting someone read a magazine I subscribe to. Jeez, does CarFax really have it's collective pantied in a bunch THAT tight? Maybe I'm wrong here (could be, I was wrong back in '86 when I thought I made a mistake, but didn't) but if I have a subscription to the service, I can run a CarFax on any dam thing I want?

And if they would have, I would have no idea it's frowned upon. Thanks GRM for not having YOUR editorial panties all bunched up.

They specifically look for these type of postings on car forums and cancel the membership of anyone who uses it for a vehicle another person asks about.

If you have the subscription you can run it on any car you want, but if you let other people use it you're violating the rules of the subscription. It's spelled out right in the customer agreement on the Carfax order form - "...redistribution of CARFAX Reports is strictly prohibited."

I wouldn't call it having their panties in a bunch, I'd call it protecting their revenue stream. Don't think of it as letting someone else look at a magazine, think of it as making an exact copy of the entire magazine and giving it to that person. Or a CD, a DVD, or anything else.

Having said that, I've seen threads like this on other boards that are just, shall we say, disguised. No mention of Carfax, people just post VINs, then edit their posts to remove them after they get the report. Not suggesting that kind of thing, of course, just saying I've seen it done.

Well, if I get a sub to CarFax (can't afford it right now being in Michigan, i.e. out of work) I'll help anyone out. But, thanks all for the info. I really had no idea.

Is the car in question about to come out of warranty? Personally the only thing a CarFax gets you that a careful inspection can't is the date the car was claimed and how many times it has been titled.

Yeah, I was looking for how many times it's been titled and what mileage it had when titled.

I think thats like having a state park sticker and making copies for your friends. Unlimited use, for the car its attached to. Its stealing to share the sticker with others.

Carfax is cheap. Pay the money!

A Carfax report does provide some level of peace of mind, but it depends on the car. If I'm buying a fairly new car from a reputable dealer, I probably won't bother. Nor would I with some $500 beater. But on an older car or one that has anything suspicious or fishy about it, I would. For instance, I bought my 944 in 2007 from a guy who lived just north of New Orleans. I made sure to run a Carfax on that one to make sure it wasn't a Katrina flood car, and because I was buying it sight-unseen.

Then how can you afford the car? It's $40 for the unlimited carfax for a month.

Ok ok ok. I guess I'm just eviler than the rest of you. I didn't see it like copying a state park sticker or GRM or something.

Hey, as long as you don't mess with state park, or, metroparks stickers, we cool.
