McALESTER - Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the protests.

More than two dozen law-enforcement officers - state troopers, sheriff's deputies and city police - formed a security cordon around the Westboro protesters.

"We're here to protect everyone," Miller said.

Westboro members picket military funerals across the country, spreading their message that "God hates America" because it tolerates homosexuality.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

I whole heartedly support the 1st amendment as it is there to protect people like me that say things others disagree with but in the case of the Westboro retards (sorry to all the people with a real mental illness) it should have been revoked.

While I don't feel sorry for them, I think whoever slashed their tires ended up sinking to their level...they're trying to provoke people, and it worked this time around.

Unfortunately you are right. If you've heard any of their drivel. They totally get off on people arguing and getting nasty with them. Unfortunately the kids are pretty much damaged beyond repair. (Yes they've let them do interviews )

I'm not so sure. It's kind of a moral dilemma. I think a discreet little tire slash might have been justified in this case. Maybe they missed picketing a funeral because of it.

Remove the valve cores, put them in an envelope, and tape said envelope to the windshield. No vandalism there, but the end result is the same.

Have rand Paul do a rally near by. Someone will get there head stomped!

Schadenfreude aside, WBC is proof of how tolerant we are and it really says a lot about this country that they've been able to go this long without being lynched or put in Gitmo.

OTOH, if they ever showed up at a loved one's funeral....

I'm not sure if I agree with the slashing, but I do give a big thumbs up to the shops in town that refused to fix their problem.

I am not a big advocate of violence but for the life of me I cannot understand how there has not been some sort of violent death at one of the funerals they protest.

Because the cops are there. I think some of them would have dissapeared by now otherwise.

In reply to Marty!:

I agree! I like to think it was out of respect for who the funeral is for and their family.

But being retired army myself, it wouldn't bother me if someone hurt them at my funeral.
Been to a few that the Patriot Guard kept watch. Good people and great service. Makes me want to get a bike just to join them.

Here is your change to test your own theories in person.
If you are going to be near NE Metro Detroit this week; so are they.

Coincidentally, I stumbled across this on another board...

Pfc. Shane Reifert, 23, of Cottrellville Township, Michigan, died Nov. 6 after his unit was attacked by insurgents in Afghanistan. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, services for this American hero will be conducted in Marine City, Michigan. The Godforsaken religious zealots of Westboro Baptist Church plan to disrupt the funeral services for this fallen hero with their hate-filled messages.. The Michigan Patriot Guard Riders have been asked by the family to provide escort services and a flag line. Volunteers are always welcome:

I went to one near here last year. You don't need a bike to join up with the Patriot Guard people. They were a friendly group who were happy to have more like minded people stand between the families and the shiny happy people from Kansas
