I just tell them to go to that specific car forum and read...do some research. Don't buy the first year model. Check the web for resale value, and how many are on the market. Ask someone who has one.

I think a lot of them are just enamored by something shiny and new.

When my Grandpa wanted a new car, he asked me about a BMW 335xi. I told him they were good cars but to make sure he got the sports package (which comes with an oil cooler). Later in the week, he told me he found the car he wanted in Maryland. I asked him if it had the sports package. He replied no. Sure enough, he had a 500mi. drive back to his house on a 100degree day and the oil went up to 280degreees

I suggested that my girlfriend buy a new Ford Fiesta, but stay away from the automatic version because of their shifting issues. Needless to say, the one very important piece of advice was ignored.

2 years and 6 reflashes, 2 new transmissions later, she's ready to get rid of that thing.

Yep. Two of my friends were looking for "appliance" type cars. Neither are into cars at all. I tried talking them into a camry or accord. They both wanted lots of #2 sees this and says, "I wont make that mistake!" Comes home with a $14,000 2011 Kia Forte. I think 14k is above the brand new price of the car btw. It was a base as they come and falling apart on the dealer lot. Really. The door handle assembly came out of the door on the passenger side and the fit of the front bumper was way off, like it had hit something. I actually laughed at him when he was telling me that he passed up a wagon called a "Mazda Speed" for 2k less. Didn't like that it was red and a year (or two) older.
