Too late now, it sounds like. But, don't even tell the insurance company about the new driver. The CAR is insured, NOT the driver. They want you to tell them, but you don't have to. We had two teen drivers for years and never told the company.
if I come visit I need to borrow your car do you have to tell your insurance company? Nope. What if I don't even own a car, therefore I have nothing insured, do you need to insure me? No because the CAR is insured.
Are you sure that's correct? Is that a land of Michigan thing perhaps?
I just called on rates to prepare for our oldest, who turns 16 in about a year. They offered a driver's ed discount, which didn't move the needle, but the good student discount cut the cost significantly. We're preparing our son for the fact that he'd better maintain at least a B average if he wants to be driving.

In Colorado it's definitely the driver that's insured. Just put my 16 year old daughter on our USAA policy, with a 2011 Nissan Xterra. Even with the good student discount, just her insurance was twice what my wife's and mine are, on all of our cars...
I will be doing exactly what my parents did to me. Make the kids pay for their own car insurance. Yes, I bought my own car too.
I'm in the camp of don't use a sports car as primary for him. When I was a kid, the insurance agent told us to get a pos pickup and make the my primary, with the mustang as a pleasure vehicle. So.. At 16, I owned a 64 chevy truck that I only ever saw the title to

I did mean to say that's what I did here in Michigan. YMMV.
insurance is a scam, it felt good not telling them.
I'm State Farm. Daughter has a 12 year old Civic. Honor Roll and safety class thingie discount the she left it at home and went to college. $85/6 month discount.
Took him a long time, but my son has his license now. $1000 for a full year, covering a 2014 Mazda 5, 2004 Lancer Ralliart wagon, 1999 Miata, and a 1988 Silverado.
Several factors in keeping the price down, including his grades. We have homeowners insurance bundled with our independent agent and we have an umbrella policy for liability.
