So, When I was in college my insurance payment was a little over a hundred dollars per month. Then I was driving a '99 Lumina. Now that I'm done with school no more "good student discount" and I drive a '94 Escort wagon. I now get to pay $244 per month for what should be minumum coverage in Michigan with a perfect driving record. Seems high to me but I don't really have anything to compare it to. Is it just that expensive because I'm a 23 year male and that makes me more likely to be stupid crash into something?

Did you shop around? Who is it with?

That's silly high, I think I'm paying closer to 1/4 that on a comparable car, given, I'm insured through my parents, but still.

It's with Amica, which is the same company my parents use so it was easy to switch to my own plan. Excellent customer service and stuff... 2 minutes on the phone and I had new tags via email when I switched cars.

You are getting hosed on many fronts.

Talk to your agent. If they won't budge, get a new agent/company.

Besides losing the "good student " discount, you may have lost the multi-policy discount you had when connected to your parents account.

Look into renters insurance. Usually the multi-line discount on your car insurance is way more than the premium on the renters policy so it's like they pay you to get more insurance.

Would your parents be willing to leave you on their policy and just have you pay your portion? That is what my parents do with me. Saves me a TON of money and makes no difference to them.

Also, we had Amica. My dad had it for about 20 years, but switched when my older brother was added. Their rates are not good at all for young people. Start checking out others. I bet you could easily cut that in half, if not more. And add your renters insurance on as well.

Wow! I pay sixtysomething a month for TWO cars. '96 Saturn and a '94 Miata. Just PL/PD through Farm Bureau in Michigan. I'm fortysomething with zero points and have never made a claim. I guess age has some benefits but your rates seem really high.

My 20yo daughter just moved to the Detroit area. Her '01 Corolla in Chicago was $70/mo. Her quote for her new place in the burbs of Detroit, $211/mo.

The only thing that changed was her zip code.

My insurance doubled moving from Columbus Ohio to Imlay City Michigan. Im sure it would have been worse closer to the city.

Is Illinois a no fault state?

This. I'm in a totally different area but Amica kept sending me stuff in the mail so I called them to get a quote....they were gonna charge me $2500 a year when I'm paying ~1200 a year now with Geico for 3 cars. shop around or get back on your parent's plan and pay them!

I chose the "move out of Michigan" option. For my wife and me, and (at the time) our three cars ('96 Miata, '95 C1500 and '12 Equinox,) our insurance was almost $2,000/yr. In Indianapolis, it is about $850.

Check into Erie Insurance.....I switched to them last year due to my former insurance agent dicking people around attempting to buy a shiney new boat or something. Much better service, better coverage, and much cheaper.

Another vote for Erie here. We have home and car insurance through them, very nice to deal with. I don;t know how their rates compare, as it's been years since I dealt with another company, but they are awesome in the customer service department.

My daughter is there for 2 years and will then get out. A coworker of hers had her car broken into in the parking lot where she works in broad daylight. They were in her car long enough to rip out an in dash radio. Just the OE radio in a pretty mundane car.
