I am aparently the sole 911 convertable fan. I've been thinking more about them since seeing Dave buy one that looks just like the one I drooled on in Jr high. Ofcourse it won't be mine as the wife wants a convertable but with any luke it will be a white slant nose with a blue top and white interior with blue piping, and if I'm lucky the ultimate '80s status symbol Testarossa grills. I believe it was the coke dealer edition
I'm put off by muscle cars mostly by those who own them. I know its a huge generality, but anyone that thinks a car can't possibly be fast because it dosen't have 80 billion cubes under the hood, dosen't have a predator carb, or gigantic meats out back... ugh.. Yes, automotive technology and innovation ended in 1973. We know it. We are sorry we developed things such as MPFI. So sorry...
Please go back to exuding Ma-Cheese-Mo during your incessant rear tire destruction sessions.
(same goes for any group that discounts any cars ability to be fast)....

One time I was in my 911 and some guy yelled out to me to "take Daddy's car home", I should have kicked his fat ass, but I'm sure the same guy would have bowed to me and offered up his girlfriend had I been in my 454 SS Chevelle. It goes both ways though....people that turn their nose up at the Chevelle go ape E36 M3 over some of the other cars. Generalities really piss me off sometimes.
Ahh. I can't stand using an owner of a car as the reason to like or dislike a car. I've met shiny happy people and idiots in every form of car, even cool, unique cars. If I was to base my dislike of cars on typical owners, there'd be no cars left to like.
BTW, while my favorite car is a '63 Ferrari 250 Lusso, I've had 3 '70 Mustangs, including a BOSS 302. While I like all musclecars, I'd say those slightly edge out the others as my favorite of that genre. I'm sooo unoriginal.

agree, but first impressions are everything. This is why autocross' and other events, like shows, need to be run carefully to keep people in the hobby....
I would like to clarify, I don't dislike Muscle cars because of their owners. I dislike Muscle cars because EVERYONE fawns over them like they're the standard by which everything else must be measured.
I've had a smattering of Porsche drivers in the last 2 days look down at me and make stupid comments about my "piece of E36 M3."
Usually when i'm just idling at a stop light.
They STFU real quick even when i just take off nicely at the light. I can see their thoughts now: "Oh dear god, what have i done?"
I hate the generalities more than anything. I used to hate Dodge Shadows. Then i rode in one with massive amounts of boost. I crave one.
Well, obviously not everyone, or you would too.
Sorry, again, using what other people like or dislike as a basis on what I might like seems just silly.
Were you around when musclecars roamed the streets new? I grew up on them then, and when I finally was able to have a car, in high school, I had a 429 powered Torino GT (and yes, I autocrossed it). It was only a couple years old at the time. I also had a 454 Chevelle, a 455 powered LeMans and a 6.6 liter Trans Am, in addition to the Mustangs (and built a 460 powered Fox Mustang in the musclecar tradition) . Of course, at the same time, I had classic air cooled Porsches, a couple Mazdas with the magical spinning triangles, and a few MGs and Fiats. (not long after I got the Torino, I also picked up an MG Midget. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum! Lol!).
My favorite build of all time was a 1966 Pontiac Tempest 326 4 door auto that I built into a GTO sedan. All of the chrome was different, the hood, tail lamps, tail panel, dash and instruments, console, front seats and of course engine.
When it was done it was a 400ci 3x2 4 speed car in Fontaine Blue with Hurst alloys.
I was 18 when I finished it.
I have never wanted another muscle car since then, but if I could find that one I would buy it back.

You had a lot of cars in high school.

I'm trying to convince turn2 to do exactly that with his.

+1
I'll throw another branch on the fire.
57 Chebbys. I don't really get it. Everyone (maybe it's just magazine editors?) seems to fawn over them as if they were the greatest thing from Detroit, ever. Me, I think they look sorta meh.
There are many machines that were/are contemporaries of the 57 Chevy which I think are wonderful, so it's not that I don't like older cars.
I just think 57 Chevys are pretty weak sauce. I don't care what kinda motor it's got. Big block, small block, turbocharged LS1, I just don't care. I lump it in with street rods, which have lots of nifty bling usually, but leave me absolutely cold.
And I thought I was the only one that '57 Chevys left cold.
I don't care for 'muscle cars' because generally they handle like garbage scows on swivel casters, they were meant more for straight line acceleration which just ain't my cup of tea. There are some exceptions, like an old bud's '71 Firebird 'sleeper'; it was dirty white, greasy handprints all over it, headliner held up with speaker magnets, you get the idea. Everything under the hood and under the car was nasty dirty, it all looked like crap at first glance. All the suspension was, IIRC, ADDCO stuff painted flat black, it had a 455 Super Duty with painted valve covers and a single snorkel air cleaner and behind that was a M21 Muncie 'rock crusher'. The only easily visible outside evidence that something was amiss was some rather wide black painted steel wheels wearing very large tires. It went like a bat out of hell and handled great but most people looked at it and laughed. I'd love to have that car today.
Those Iron Horse and Big Dog motorcycles, just like Harleys, turn me off like a light switch. Sorry, I do not see the point of building a chrome coated anodized aluminum show bike. Again, they handle like crap.
Come to think of it, my #1 criteria for cars and motorcycles I dislike is that they just don't handle.

I'm trying to go down a similar road with my 72 Firebird. It started life as a base model with a Pontiac 350/automatic. So far it has 4 wheel disc brakes, larger front and rear sway bars, quicker ratio steering box, ws6 springs, poly bushings, adjustible konis, 455 4spd. I'm prepping it for paint now and trying to decide between flat or gloss black and hope to have it on the road this Fall/Winter.

I agree, typically I find myself liking Muscle car owners more than I do Honder owners (I'm a Honder guy). I just don't like the general public's ideology that it's got to be pre 75 and have a V8 to be fast.
To answer your question, No, I wasn't around in the glory day's of the big 3. I was, however, raised on the Mopar Bible. My dad and I would go to the Mopar nationals in Columbus each year. He's owned a few of'em too (67 440 4-Barrel Charger [rare], 70 340 6-pack AAR Cuda, 70 383/440 Road Runner, and a 69 Mustang Mach 1 w/ a 351 Cleveland). I was the kid that thought V8's were king until I went to college and drove a 40 Hp FSAE car that weighed 550 Lbs. After experimenting in college, I bought a Miata and proceeded to scare my V8 friends driving on the windy bits.
hehe. Like I said, I had a big block musclecar and an MG midget at the same time. I loved muslecars, and right out of high school, bought an RX3 and ported the crap out of it to go autocrossing (since the Torino was just too big and the midget was too slow). It was fun to show up the typical jacked up musclecar owner that it didn't take cubes to go fast. OTOH, I also came back to cubes because there's nothing like the feeling of a big block bellowing out as it thrusts you forward. That and I was just as tired of the small bore sports car elitists that hated on domestic muscle as much as the drag race fans that hated on little corner turners. There's room for both.
