anyone ever watch this show? it's on as background noise for me right now, and they had some dude from Chevrolet talking about how the Volt is " definitely an enthusiast car"... then he lists off a bunch of things that are the opposite of what an "enthusiast" would look for...
perfectly silent.
no shifting.
smooth.
etc..
Stupid show.
But doll houses have enthusiasts as well so why not an electric or hybrid car.

Maybe it's GM that doesn't understand car people? I have an episode of that show that I keep meaning to edit and post on youtube. They are covering the NAIAS and some GM spokeskid is talking about the CTS IIRC. Talking about the exterior styling he says "This is a wheel." then goes on to talk about said wheel. REALLY!?? I needed to be informed that that round thing with a rubber ring on it is a wheel? The other commentary was equally dumb.
Sounds like a stupid show. The Volt is a cool Hybrid but no where near an enthusiast car.

he was hyping up the performance aspects of the car that separates it from the regular boring electric junk that the other companies make... he was one of those young, hip, cool guys with the stupid little fake mohawk and the hip t shirt with a dragon printed on it- he was the perfect focus group tested generic unoffensive d-bag hipster dude that was sent to tell us how cool the car is despite it's reputation...
Maybe you are trying to use your version of the word "enthusiast".

Thank you. The Volt's pluses/minuses aside for a minute, that kind of stuff is pure Madison Avenue manipulation hype.

does a perfectly silent car that doesn't shift and rides smooth fit into your idea of something that an "enthusiast" would want to buy?
it's an appliance that they are trying to market as being a sports car.

he is the oddball, like those 2 or 3 people in the country that think it's a good idea to try to make a Yugo fast or the few people that will buy a 2014 Corvette because it can potentially get 35mpg if driven nice.
Enthusiast car? I would say that it is definitely important to enthusiasts, whether they/we realize it and recognize it or not. The technology is groundbreaking, and it very well could be the future of our hobby. And enthusiasts can certainly buy it and enjoy it, even make it better, but the Volt is not an enthusiast car in and of itself.

Enthusiasm is enthusiasm. I'm a cheap commuter enthusiast. You can't convince me I'm not.
On the other hand...I'm not trying to tell everyone that the answer to a 50 mile daily commute is a $100 Mazda 323 with no A/C and rustoleum-painted hood.
Enthusiast means different things to different people. Just cause it says enthusiast, doesn't mean FTOD autocross car.
The Volt is the future of enthusiast cars. Heck, one of GRM's own enthusiasts has one.

Theres nothing groundbreaking about an electric car with a generator onboard. Trains have been doing it for ages.

Submarines have been doing it even longer....and somehow they never caught on fire if exposed to salt water
If the batteries get exposed to sea water on your boat, you're submarining wrong.
