I went to South Africa for business in 2006, and it was definitely a humbling and somewhat terrifying experience. My company hired a duo of private security 'guards' for me, because as already said, the local police force can only be relied upon to bribe you on the streets. I was met by my security agents, fully automatic weapons in-hand, at the gate of my flight in Johannesbourg, and they didn't leave my side for 5 days. They posted in adjoining hotel rooms, drove me everywhere, and didn't leave until I was physically on the jetway in the airport. I never left my hotel room except for meetings and business matters. Food was brought to me in-room and everything. We got somewhat close and I still am facebook friends with one of them ironically, haha. But yes- the stuff they said happens down there is almost unbelievable. Murder and violent crime rates are so high that the police force is completely inadequate to protect the public or others, so private firms are sometimes the only option to keep protected.
It was an experience I would never wish anyone to have to do, and I just felt so sad for the residents there... Its just a constant fear-loop of getting robbed, murdered, or raped.
And we have the dash cam footage.
At 0:09 you can see the car pulling up next to him while shots are being fired. He cuts the guy off and says "Fxxk you" in Afrikaans.
Just came here to post that. It's nice to see context that he was swerving to prevent the guy from staying next to him and get him behind.

oooooh. "Born A Crime", I burned through that in two days. I couldnt put it down.
Looks like a pretty well-organized ambush, too - shooting at the truck from one vehicle with two others blocking the road up front. I wonder if they had inside information on the route or if they also had even more vehicles scouting. Must be a pretty sophisticated and well funded organized crime ring.
The other thing I'm wondering about is how often they need to transport cash across deep water, with that snorkel on the truck. They clearly have some different armored car requirements over there.

Could possibly be a dust separator. My uncle used to use one on his truck in the Outback. Needed to be emptied about once a day. It had a canister about halfway down, though.

Except it ended badly for that guy in Bullitt...
Note the driver was shaking badly at the end right before he jumped out with the M-16. Adrenalin dump does that and messes with fine motor skills.
I work with numerous people who left South Africa because of this stuff. Farmers who live in rural areas were disarmed and have no protection from violent marauders. Its a badly broken country.
Driver knew something was up long before they launched the attack, judging by how much time he was spending in the mirrors. I'm a little surprised he didn't clue the shotgun seat in earlier.
