So I've been smelling a familiar, pungent smell for weeks now, which surprised me, because our cat has never marked anything in the house. (My last cat, whom we had to put down at 20, was not as dependable in her later years, so I've been there, done that, bought the carpet.) I've also had trouble locating the actual spot, though the smell seemed strongest in Tommy's room.
Then we went on vacation... and the cat pee smell came with us.
Turns out it was Tommy's sneakers. When they weren't on his feet, they spent the week outside on hotel-room balconies. First I thought the cat had gotten a shot at them somehow, and washed and deodorized the crap out of them. Then I realized the smell was actually getting worse, and decided it was 15 YO hormones. Went on the internets last night to see if there was any remedy/wash/treatment--even thought about asking the dermatologist about foot botox (really--the smell is baaad), and instead found this
Yeah. Some Nikes smell like cat pee. (Or "wee" if you're British, apparently.) And not even a little--a whole, whole lot. Consider yourself warned. And I'd like to extend a public apology to my son. And my cat.

White Vinegar in large dishes. The smell makes you crave salad, but it will clear out just about any odor from a room.
OTOH, I would put the cat outside.
One more reasone I wear Asics.
+1 on white vinegar, we use it to mop our floors. Safe for the babies and smells good and doesn't linger forever like chemicals.

Fixed that for you.
And I tried vinegar, pet deodorizer, Fabreeze, baking soda... you name it. The smell is coming from some sort of glue or other material in the shoes. It does NOT come out.

No kidding! Is Nike doing anything about it, like a massive Pee-call?
Fix the Nikes with the proper amounts of gasoline and fire to get rid of the smell.
Then buy him a pair of Chuck Taylors, when they smell at least you know it will be from the feet in them. Besides they offer better pedal feel.

I guess they will refund purchase price at the retailer's, but if you read the link, they first sniff 'em to make sure they smell bad "enough."
I'd hate to be the person in charge of that task--you could smell these from another room.

Somehow the image of a person with a really long nose popped up in my mind....a guy with a nose that actually reaches into the next room, standing there in a white lab coat smelling cat pee nikes from a big pile.

My recipe for shoes:
Buy the canvas deckers. Cheapest ones you can get; usually about 10 bucks. Sometimes even cheaper. You can get them in blue/black/tan/white. Buy them a half size large. Add Dr. Scholl's pads and wear two pairs of socks
Your feet will love you for it; works for me!

I only buy Reeboks, I won't support a war criminal.
Ammonia leeching from a Chinese product... whoodathunkit?
"Cat Pee Nikes" Did they have a yellow swoosh?
Store 'em in a big ziplock. That way the smell can really build up in the bag. When you take them back to the store and they open that bag, there should be no question of "bad enough"
Oh, there's no question now. That would just create a weapon of mass destruction.

Ed Zachary. I'd ditch 'em immediately, as they're probably made from ground up chinese political prisoner cats, computer parts, and lead.
I was pretty bummed to find that my new pair of DC's was makee in chinee.
This is a pretty cool site. Looks as though I might have to switch back to New Balance. Phife Dog tells me they'll help me avoid a narrow path:

Joel, those said Now Belance on the box and you know it!
I'm pretty sure NB's most expensive running shoes are still made in the States.

Too bad they're pretty much crap.
Sorta OT: way back in the Dark Ages the Mercury Tracer version of the Mazda Protege was assembled in Mexico. There was a tech bulletin, not a recall, which stated that if the owner complained of a fishy odor all the padded interior panels (door panels, headliner, etc) were to be replaced.
I had a pair of docs start rotting. Apparently some combination of my foot, this particular dead cow, and the shmang they shared was enough to launch some nasty mold that started eating the leather, and stunk something horrible. Too bad, cause I liked them.
Vinegar smells about as bad as cat pee -1.
If you have an mortars left over from the 4th they do quite amazing damage to shoes!
