Here's the deal. The Cavalier has its vin on the windshield, but some dumbass over-sprayed when rattle-canning the car. Covered up most the tag and all the digits. I'd like to use thinner to remove the paint. Will that damage the tag?

The door is pinned shut very well. Where else can I find the vin on a 97 cavalier?

Anyone? Paint thinner to get paint off the vin? Is there a safer way?

razor blade...just scrape the paint.
the tag is aluminum usually, doubt you'll wreck it.

Most VIN tags are laser etched.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's either etched or stamped. You should be fine with lacquer thinner or mineral spirits.

Yep, it's at least going to be stamped into the tag. Paint removal shouldn't hurt it.

Paint remover was the answer. It did no damage to the vin. Now to run the numbers for piece of mind.
