Anyone else besides me notice that these things are falling like rocks? They are soon going to be in Grassroots territory.

i havent seen any super cheap caymans yet, but i have seen Cayenne at bargain basement prices, saw 2004 v8 with under 40k on the clock for 22,000 last week.. thats a 340 hp, awd four door suv with serious on and off road capability, and can tow 7700+ pounds without breaking a sweat, and a Stuttgart on the hood...Ill admit i was tempted, but i figure a few more months of this economy and theyll be going for 15k ...

Yeah, I've been watching the prices on them. They're still $50K+ here in Canada, but a short 5 minute drive across the border to Detroit and I can pick one up for $30K. Exchange, taxes etc would drive it up some, but its still a great price. I almost pulled the trigger on a used Boxster, but realized I hate convertibles so I didn't. Actually, its not so much that I hate convertibles, but I can get a sun burn in about 10 minutes in the middle of a blizzard and I know I wouldn't be able to resist putting the top down every day from March to October, and I don't want to spend the half the year with a burn, so I went looking for something with a proper roof instead. My next car will probably be a Cayman.

I had a post on here a month or two ago about a dealer that had a Boxster and an MR2 for roughly the same price and with nearly the same mileage. Neither car lasted long on that lot. I am seeing 1 or 2 Boxsters every now and then for under $15,000, tho I'm not well enough versed on them to know the running costs. Caymans are rare in Memphis, but so are 911s, with a few Cayennes and the VW "sister model" seen on the streets.

I can't help but wonder whether the crappy VW/Porsche dealer is responsible for the lowish sales numbers for Porsches and the higher priced VWs.

I'm not a big Porsche nut, but I really love how the Cayman S looks. I would not mind buying that car in the unlikely event I ever start making any real money.

People who consider themselves Porsche "enthusiasts" won't buy them because they aren't a 911 or anywhere near expensive enough. And I'd imagine rich old ladies would tire of them quickly and turn them in for a Lexus LS460 in short order.

All in all, it looks good for us real car enthusiasts.

The Cayman is one of those cars that is on my gonna get one someday list. But then I'm a Porsche lover, even those that aren't 911's. I'd love to find a solid 914 to tinker with.

HA! yep wise words, but like everyone else on GRM, I'm a glutton for self inflicted punishment..fortunately im broke so not an issue at the moment, and not willing to create a payment plan or more debt to dig out of right now... BUT- i did run a search and found a 94' Cayenne for $14.9 with 99k, a 2005 turbo cayenne for $19.9, and a 2007 Cayman with 10.k for $35.9... just pipe dreaming for now though, but if youve got the jingle, theres bargains to be had... luckily for me ive got a 25 year old and 30 year old p car to play with, might even drive them again at some point..

The depreciation of those cars in the first year is unbelievable. You are easliy looking at 25-30%. I think that's only going to get worse now since they are using direct injection this model year. For some reason I am strangely attracted to these cars. The Porsche dealer close to where I work had an '07 demo up until about a month ago. Really nice looking - Blue with stone interior.

how long do the warranties run on that kind of machine? 3 years? 2? 4? If they're going down that much getting one relatively bargain priced still under warranty would give you a fair amount of time of worry free cayman godliness....

I too love the cayman. A co-worker of mine was showing one off at work the other day, I was really impressed with the car. But being the enthusiast of the group I like a smart ass asked to see the engine...

Lets just say the best view we go was by laying down on the ground and peering up underneath.... I would not want to maintain one of those...

Funny but true. Remember the 944 and how some said it wasn't a "true" Porsche? Both great cars, regardless of what badge is on the front of it. I'd take either.

service is a pita on the boxter/cayman, just about everything has to be done from the bottom up. m96 engine has its issues as well, but most were worked out before they killed it for the ma101/102 new plant.. and aftermarket for the m96 is really just starting to kick in .. just like the 924 turbo in its time, the cayman s has proven to be faster than the latest 911's, with a bit of massaging.. i think thats what gets to the "purists." people dont like to admit (or refuse too) that a car from the same make, at half the price they just paid, has a better performance signature. nothing new there though, and Porsche has "detuned" their lower end models regularly even going way back to avoid that issue, but we figure out ways to get around that.. :)

4 years, 50k miles from new.

CPO is +2 years (6 total) and +50k (100k total) miles after the original manufacturer warranty expires.

We were at the dealer the other day, and the service manager made the comment that at 6'2", he didn't fit in one very well. Maybe that means us shorter people will find them more budget friendly. I really want a Cayman. Just like the most other non-911 based Porsches though, the diehards are not seemingly buying them. I'd much rather have one than a Boxster. Of course between than the Z4 Coupe, I'm not sure which I would prefer. I need to shop for that one too....

Interesting... for some strange reason, my g/f (current MCS and former M3 owner who generally dislikes P-cars) actually likes the Cayman... While neither of us is looking for another car anytime soon, the idea of one of these actually being attainable in the near future is promising.

6'2" & he doesn't fit. Hmmm.... Rules that out. I can 2nd your opinion on the Z4 - another really nice car. I think I'd try to find a S52 powered Z3 M-Coupe though. I drove one of those and LOVED it. Unfortunately, I had just bought another house.

There are a few S's on eBay sub-40K. Some base Caymans for really low 30's.

I guess I was noticing they've lost a third of their value in three years. I guess that's the economy for you.

Which is freakin' great for a bottom feeder like myself! I may have to wait a few years and hope I'm still in good enough financial shape to get one when they hit 20k or 15k.

They are truly gorgeous too. Great lines.
