Hey guys, I was changing the ceiling fan for my wife's office and like most things it can't be easy. I got it off and removed and there appears to be 3 120v sets of wires run into it? I'm going to go into the attic and try to figure out what's happening, but something I find really weird is how they were grouped before I go into it.
The fan/light is run off a single switch, 3 of the white wires are grouped together and one black wire. And then there's a bundle of 2 black wires and one white wire? The wiring in our house has always been a little odd, but what the hell? And of the Three white wires grouped together, one was broken.
**Edit, further googling indicates this is probably the switch loop? Though everywhere I'm reading says it's supposed to be marked?
That is going to a dead ended switch. The whites that are grouped together are the neutral wires. The blacks are constant hot. The white with the blacks is carrying power to the switch. just put a wire nut on those and dont hook anything to them. The black by itself is coming back from the switch.
Thank you! That makes sense.
Now I'm just going to figure out why there are 3 bundles running through?
Well, that and fix the broken wire that's hanging there...

That's pretty common in older houses. The feeds go to the light box and then jump out to the rest of the room. You can't do it now because you need to have a neutral wire in the switch box. The way yours is wired only has to hot wires and ground in the switch box.

Roger! Thanks again!
My first thought when I saw inside the box was, "someone from GRM will know whats going on here...." - lol
Well, good news is the broken wire was where they used to have two switches, one to control the fan separately. I also misspoke a bit, there was 4 bundles going in, one goes to the outlet on the far wall.
I've removed "extra" to clean it all up a bit.
