As I complete the every 10 year obligation.. It's hard for me not to reflect..
Then.. I drove an old civic.. ( I miss this car dearly)..
Now.. I drive a Rav4 that my wife drove then.. It's payd4.. I hate it
Then.. Not a lot of money
Now.. I got enough.. I've worked hard.. It hasnt been easy.
Then.. I was just growing my career out of the last aviation downturn as a jr. manager just starting my leadership journey.
Now.. I'm staring down the barrel of a down turn.. A semi seasoned director with 10 times the people reporting to me now..
Then.. A barely 1 year old girl..
Now... 3 kids.. No time :-)
Ntohing is perfect, but it's been a good ride all in all.
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
10 years ago I was in the magical zone between buying my wife new hood ornaments and discovering that she wanted them to fish for her next victim.
I was married and financially comfortable. It's taken pretty much the full ten years to get back to financial stability.
I drove an Allroad and a Phaeton and a Jeep TJ with a big ol' lift. Now I drive an aging Passat, elderly Suburban, and Zoomboni.
My kids were 8 and 5 and adorable. Now they are 18 and 15 and teenagers. Ugh, teenagers.
I worked for the government. I still work for the government, but now with student loans and the same job.
My hobby was home improvement and every spare moment was spent polishing up the house. Now my hobby is cars, and I hang out online with you dorks.
Just finished my census and was able to resist listing 3 cockatiels and two goffin cockatoos as Australians. Also did not list the Moluccan cockatoo as someone from a south Pacific island or list the sugar gliders as New Zealanders. But I wanted to.
10-years ago vs. today:
- Different employers/careers
- Different city/state
- Different Miata
- Same family, though with the addition of our son-in-law
Overall, despite some struggles we went through, and even considering the current pandemic & recession, I'd definitely say we're in a better place today.
Now...
No wife
No pets
Fewer cars
Not ridden the murdercycle in 2 years
More $
No debt
Less happy
