Coming home the other day, the Saab died on me. It seemed like it ran out of gas. I am trying to figure out what's up.

When I got the car, the fuel gauge was not working. The sender is integrated into the fuel pump, so I replaced the whole thing. That was over a year and 6,000 miles ago. Instinct tells me the fuel pump died because it's the only thing I touched in the fuel system, but I checked a few other things to be sure.

All fuses and relays related to the pump were checked out; no issues were found. The fuel gauge still works; it is a separate system but gets power from the same circuit. There is fuel in the tank. There are no obstructions in the fuel lines. If I hotwire a 12v source to the leads on the fuel pump, nothing happens—no whirring or clicking at all.

Before I drop the tank and swap the pump, is there anything I could be missing? I feel like it's as obvious as the nose on my face, but I am kind of dense.

No sign of life from the pump when you hotwire it is a sure sign of a dead pump, no question about it.

Whack the bottom of the fuel tank with a hammer and see if it starts?
