FWIW, the French impression of an American is a dude standing around, smugly chewing gum. I learned this when I worked for a French-owned company.
When they spoke "American" it was pretty damn funny.

That's pretty awesome.
"Loud and cocky" seems to be the basis of the American stereotype for a lot of cultures.
