Are there any college hockey fans on here?

Any trash talk? Predictions on champions? etc?

What kinda college hockey are we talking about? ACHA? NCAA? What level?

In any case, yes I am, but to varying degrees. I also referee ACHA (club hockey) D1 and D2, so I have a pretty different viewpoint from most folks.

EDIT: I assume by you being an Alabama fan, that we are talking NCAA D1. In that case, I'm a fan of North Dakota. Because they have the coolest logo.

I wish the Chargers luck in the new WCHA.

We just beat Mich Tech this past weekend twice.

Mixed review for the B1G at the moment, Minnesota is #1 with Michigan #2, while Wisconsin is back in 12th. BUT, all of the "States" are not even getting votes for the top 20.

So far, this season is massively different than last- we actually have two goaltenders who are playing well (one is hurt), and the team has a good attitude. The hard part so far- we are not exactly scoring at the moment.

Go Blue!

I do the raffle at UVM games. Go Catamounts. Too bad they have a weak coach and weaker power play.

I also play goal if by play you mean stand in net and hope they hit you with the puck!

It is going to be a rough season for us with 11 freshmen on the roster and they have been getting the most of the playing time. But they look like they have been improving massively game to game so I am hopefully for the next few years and we have got a couple strong commitments for next year. I am really glad they created the Big Ten conference cause I am not sure how long we would have been able to hang on as a independent.

Hockey is a little different than most sports as far as how much it matters being a freshman. Usually, if you're playing at that level, you will be coming in as a 20 year old Freshman with 4 years of junior hockey under your belt. Not as big an issue as an 18 year old going up against a 23 year old in football.

Yeah but it also means that most of them haven't played together much.

Michigan has 10 Freshman, and lost a few guys early to the NHL.

Of the 10, 3 are really playing well as a single line, two more are doing a great job at the point (an additional D man just went down for 6 weeks). And we have a freshman goalie.

It can work.

Y'all are also able to attract much more elite talent then us. And our third coach in three years.

Our goalie is also a freshmen. He looked good in our loss to Ferris State last week.

I like watching college hockey. I have no allegiance or alliance with any certain teams nonetheless. I didn't know that college hockey was played below the mason dixon line.

Last year I reffed an ACHA game in Springfield Illinois. The teams playing? Northern Arizona and Canyon College (California). It was some kind of a playoff game, but how ridiculous was that?

There have been some rumors of other southern hockey schools, but I think it's far, far more likely to see another B1G school add hockey. Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois being the head of that pack.

UAH almsot lost their program, thanks to the FB fans in Alabama. Thinking that the tide needed even more money (they are the #3 earning FB program), the Chargers had the program already canceled.

Thankfully, that did not happen.

Nebraska I know nothing about. Illinois, I would love to see it. With a very strong club program, I think this would be a great addition to both the area and the league. Not to mention, Illinois doesn't have a single D1 hockey program anymore. Iowa? I don't really see it happening with them, hearing this from my cousin who works in the athletic department there. I would think that it is more likely for Iowa State to get a D1 team (but they are not B1G).

EDIT: Forgot one thing about Illinois: Jimmy Johns. There have been rumors that he would plunk down the money for it.

In reply to mtn:

Apparently hockey is very popular in Nebraska. Learned that through the fold at Nebrasak Omaha, who were part of the CCHA until last year. Nebraska Lincoln was never going to do it with Tom Osborne as AC. Now that he is gone.

Iowa, that's still a rumor, more driven by ISU than anything else.

Illinois has some history playing college hockey, and Illinois-Chicago was also part of the CCHA.

Once the B1G gets more air time on the BTN, and schools see some more money... well, IF is more likely. But if it happens, there will be more schools joining like Penn State just did.

Illinois-Chicago had a great program, but they had to choose between Basketball or Hockey (not sure if it was funding, or if it was Title 9)

IIT used to have a D1 program.

While not Illinois, it is close to it--SLU had a D1 program in the 70's.

We also have at least 20 club hockey teams at the college level. Not bad. With the Blackhawks and Blues both doing very well, I think that this would be an ideal time to try it at UoI. I would like to see it at Northwestern as well, but there is probably NO chance of that ever happening.

Yeah basically they were planning on cutting it because of funding within the Alabama college system for sports (because Nick Saban totally needs to get payed more). Thankfully someone organized Save UAH Hockey on facebook and there was enough pressure on the school system and donations that it was uncanceled. Unfortunately it caused us to lose a number of good players (including our goalie to North Dakota). I am glad that seems to all be behind us now. I would like some closer teams though so it would be easier to travel to see games rather then just home games. As far as I know we are the only southern DI or DIII school in hockey.
