Comet NEOWISE

I dragged my self out of bed at the crack of dawn this morning to see if I could spot the comet that is passing by.

I was pleasantly surprised how well my old Pixel 2 phone photographed it. 

In my neck of the woods just north of Portland OR it's visible just before dawn in the northeast sky, to the left of Venus. The article says binoculars are needed, but I was able to see it easily with the naked eye. Google Sky map doesn't show it, but was helpful to get oriented on where to look, and is just too cool. I highly recommend it.

I was up early, but it was raining. Maybe tomorrow.

I think it will be visible  for two weeks or so.

It's been cloudy for weeks here, so we've not had any chance to see it yet.

I cannot believe I missed this! I spent an hour just standing around star gazing and shooting the breeze around midnight last night, I had no idea something cool was about to fly by shortly after I went to bed

This is cool, but I'm not thinking cool enough for me to get up that early. Maybe I'll change my mind. 

I've got the alarm clock set to eyeball this   . 

Too much light pollution where I'm at. Dammit.

Hey, very cool!

Had the new to me telescope out last night and got a good look at Jupiter and Saturn.  Didn't know about the comet. 

I saw it yesterday morning before dawn.  Had to take my neice to the ER for a kidney/UTI infection, I was not allowed to wait in the waiting room, so I went for a walk and watched it.

I got up last night/this morning and saw it. Really neat!

Maybe I'll have to set an alarm for tomorrow morning. 

That's an amazing pic. I tried last night and failed. I'm gonna try your trick and see if I can put a bunch of nice dark trees in the foreground and see if that helps!

We also got her nice camera out and I was able to stabilize it enough to get some pretty decent shots with 20s exposure. I'll upload when she sends them to me.

Still trying to get a chance to see it. I discussed driving somewhere it isn't cloudy, no matter how far it is, with my wife.

Has anyone in the Northeast been able to see this yet in the evening? Just looking with the naked eye, we are near Cape Cod. We have tried twice but I think it has been bad timing/ luck. 1st time we looked too late, last night clouds may have been blocking it. Should it be just after sunset or once it is really dark ?

Tried last night from 10:00-11:00 and it was tough. There were wispy clouds that had large gaps but the closer you get to the horizon the tighter they go. We were using my 12x42 binoculars and only got a couple random glimpses of it. Going back out tonight as the weather should be better. 

I saw it tonight! I had to leave the city and head up to Falls Lake Dam. There were a fair bit of people up there with varying levels of astronomy and photography gear. We used my wife's Solarium app to locate where is should be, then used binoculars to find it. Once we knew where it was, it was visible to the naked eye, but it's also in the general direction of Durham, so there's still a fair bit of light pollution. 

It's pretty cool! We're going to try to drag a telescope up there tomorrow night, weather permitting and bring the kiddos up with us.

I couldn't see it in the mornings because my view to the east is obstructed by trees, but I've seen it now that it is in the evening.

Clouds!!

Going to try again tonight.

Saw it Saturday night.  Couldn't make it out looking straight at it but looking 10 degrees off allowed out peripheral vision to make it out (peripheral is where the good night vision is).

Pulled our the good binoculars and it was totally clear.  Very cool thing.

Wife and I stayed up Saturday night to watch it. IT was really dim and hard to see with the naked eye. I saw it she didn't. I wish I had a tripod for the big camera I'd get a photo.

How many degrees above the horizon will it get?  When is it highest?  My view to the Northwest is fairly obscured by trees.  I may need to drive to someplace or get up on the roof.
