I keep getting texts about using paypal to pay for things I have on craigslist. It feels like a scam.
The whole if it looks like a duck thing.
How are they doing this ?

If I'm gonna take paypal I'll at least do it on ebay where there's some semblance of security (or at least feedback and a papertrail to look to)
Could be some people want to buy your item on credit, could be some are scammers. Not worth the risk IMHO. Just to easy too file for a reversal after they get your item, not even looking at the nigerian scammer side of it.
I have sent paypal and one money order for long distance items but I knew it was risky and hoped not to get burned. I won't take paypal though. Craigslist is for cash and carry.
Or have them send it as a gift through Paypal. Then there are no fees and they waive all their rights. When I use Paypal, I make sure it's a real transaction if I'm paying, but if I'm receiving I make sure it's set up as a gift. Change the rules so you have the advantage.
If I buy or sell something long distance through PayPal, I always make sure to use, or tell them to use shipping with tracking and delivery confirmation. That way you can prove an item arrived.

This. Right on!
I only accept non-ebay paypal payments in gift form, or Western Union, or USPS Money Orders. Anything else is suspect.
" I will gladly pay your asking price, but I must pay with paypal. Someone will pick the item up for me"
"Cash only, personal delivery."
"But its very easy to set up a Paypal account. Just follow this link..."
"berkeley off."
