My mother and sister did something kinda cool. Instead of a cruise ship, they took a series of ferries from Vancouver to Alaska and stayed in various lodgings along the way. Cost them more money, and not every stopover was awesome, but they were glad to have done it that way. They spent a week or so in Alaska and flew back.
